Tiptree's first novel - recommended for fans

"Cold, cold and alone, the evil presence roams the star-streams. It is immense and dark and almost immaterial; its powers are beyond those of any sentient thing. And it is in pain. The opening lines of " Up the Walls of the World".
"Up the Walls of the World "(1978) was one of only two novels written by author James Tiptree, Jr. (1915-87). Triptree was the pen name for Alice Sheldon.
I am not one to "damn with faint praise" so I will say straight up that my overall impression was one of disappointment with novel. The reliance on the pseudo-science of ESP and astral body transfers was not credible to this reader. At times I felt like I was getting a veiled dose of L. Ron Hubbard's psychobabble. I will freely acknowledge that the author made an exceptional creative attempt to convey a sense of "alien-ness" which, to my experience, few writers in the field of science fiction have matched. If only an editor had paired this novel down to about two hundred pages and eliminated all those CAPS!
My admiration of Ms. Sheldon stems primarily from reading her short stories, the novel "Brightness Falls from the Air"(1985) and an excellent biography "James Tiptree, Jr.: The Double Life of Alice B. Sheldon"(2007) by Julie Phillips. Interestingly Ms. Phillips does not discuss the plot of "Up the Walls of the World " in her 400 plus page biography. She does comment haw it was rejected by publishers and received some negative reviews.
All admirers of James Tiptree should, of course, read this novel. 1st time readers curious about this author's fiction should immediately read her other novel "Brightness Falls from the Air"(1985). Yes, I'm prejudiced since that book is one of my personal favorites and is, in my opinion, a much more accessible and logical story than "Up the Walls of the World".
Just what do those Amazon stars mean? Well, applied to fiction books I interpret them as follows:
5 stars - highly recommended
4 stars - recommended
3 stars - ok but...I had some issues, concerns...but, then again you might like it if...
2 stars - only for diehard fans of the author, friends and family etc.
1 stars - avoid like the plague

Fascinating, deeply moving experience

A must-read for all fans of science fiction

Tiptree employs lyrical, gorgeous prose throughout this novel of destruction and rebirth. There are telepathy and psychic phenomena, alien body-snatching and parental love, youthful energy and the exhaustion of old age. So many themes resonate throughout this gorgeously written, ambitiously imagined, and perfectly realized novel. A must-read for all fans of science fiction.
