The new edition also provides, under one cover, theoretical background information, medical information, diagnostic information, and specific instructional information for classroom teachers and related service professionals to use in determining functional abilities for program planning and writing IEPs, collecting data to monitor IEPs, and ideas for hands-on materials that teachers can create and use for instruction in their classrooms. Each chapter begins with a brief outline, discusses background medical information and theory; discusses evaluation, diagnosis, programming, and IEP monitoring; and ends with a summary. Also included are the new research and developments in the field and an expanded view of motor skills. Tables have been reformatted at the back of each chapter. A major addition to this text is the focus on "Snoezelen" which includes developing a Snoezelen resource room, designing the room with placement of the special materials, and specific ways of using the Snoezelen room and the sensory stimulation materials for relaxation,! leisure and enjoyment.

About the Author
Bruce Thyer is currently a Professor and former Dean with the College of Social Work at Florida State University. Dr. Thyer spent the years 1987 - 2002 with the University of Georgia, where he earned the rank of Distinguished Research Professor. He is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. In 2012 he was elected to the Social Work Academy of the National Academies of Practice. Dr. Thyer is the founder and current editor of one of social work's premier journals, RESEARCH ON SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE, and is the author of over 250 articles, 80 chapters and he had authored or edited over 25 professional books. His research interests involve the promotion of evidence-based practice, evaluation research, applied behavior analysis, and social work theory.

Not a good textbook

This book contains some good information and makes some very important points about cultural diversity within the social work realm, but that is the limit of the good points I found in it. There is not a drop of color inside this book, and though I am sure that brings down the price, there is nothing in it to aid learning or memory retention. Furthermore, the data in many places is out of date, there are many typos and grammar errors, and the huge amount of in-text referencing makes the content clumsy to read. Finally, it tends to lack in content whenever the population it is describing is very diverse. For example, one chapter only discusses Lesbians, and there is no real mention of gays, bisexuals, or transgender individuals; and, the only people with disabilities who are discussed are the hearing and visually impaired. This textbook is really lacking in detail, and though it makes a good effort, it falls well short of the mark, in my opinion.

I recently read a review on Amazon by a person named “anonymous” regarding my book “Dying for the Job”. I generally do not respond to persons who make statements about other author’s works under the mask of anonymity, but I think this particular one deserves comment.

First, these comments are a disservice to the twenty authors who wrote chapters in this book. They are all accomplished scientists- epidemiologists, psychologists, biostatisticians, sociologists, and physicians. I might ask anonymous what his/her credentials are.

Anonymous first statement “the real question is, what is the relative risk of police work compared to demographically matched non-police peers in the general population, and to other occupations?” can be answered by just one among many others of our research groups 89 peer reviewed publications in police stress and health. In summary, we determined that police officers, even at young ages, were already exhibiting increased levels of subclinical cardiovascular disease, compared with the similarly aged civilian population sample from the same geographical region (Joseph, Violanti, et al, 2010, JOEM ,52,10, 2010). All of the other studies we have done demonstrate positive associations between stress, cardiovascular, and metabolic diseases.

It also appears that anonymous has a problem with our suicide chapter. It is true that there is much controversy about police suicide, and in all of my previous writings on this topic, I point out the differences of opinion on this topic. I did not do so in this chapter because I felt it repetitive. I still firmly believe that despite the controversy, law enforcement personnel are at increased risk for suicide. In looking at the latest Centers for Disease Control (CDC) data, I found that police officers had a 69% greater risk for suicide than did the United States working population. This figure was adjusted age, gender, and ethnicity and involved over 1,400,000 persons. To me, this is good evidence. Additionally, the study by O’Hara, et al (2013) fortifies these results.

Regarding cancer, the chapter by Wirth, et al, who are well versed in cancer research, reviews the majority of published literature on cancer among police. Additionally we have in the past conducted three mortality studies on police. Every one of them showed an increase for certain cancer sites. The main conclusion of these studies- police have an increased risk for cancer.

As for life expectancy of police officers, apparently anonymous has not read our latest study which compared police life expectancy to that of the U.S. population (Violanti, et al 2013). On average, the life expectancy of police officers in our sample was significantly lower than the U.S. population (mean difference in life expectancy =21.9 years; 95% CI: 14.5-29.3; p

Good Analysis of War of 1812 AND Battle of New Orleans

To win the battle, but lose the war is an apt cliche for the Americans regarding the Battle of New Orleans and the War of 1812. Despite the title, this book is about more than the Battle of New Orleans and spends significant time discussing the causes of the War of 1812, the major battles of the war and the peace negotiations. (In fact, Reilly doesn't begin to address the Battle of New Orleans until page 171 in a book of 371 pages of text.) The book does several things well. It assesses dispassionately the role of military and political leadership in crucial events and battles of the War. The essential role of generalship and statesmanship in these affairs is one of the sub-themes of the work. Reilly demonstrates well the crucial relationship between the events and strategies of the War of 1812 and the Napoleonic Wars of Europe. Unlike many military histories, this book demonstrates why particular tactics were or were not sensible. Finally, it debunks legends and sometimes conventional wisdom about the war and battle with the use of the contemporary papers, diaries and court-martial records.

Outstanding

This is indeed the superior history of the Battle of New Orleans and is especially valuable for the analysis of the

political stakes. In short, the British had every intention of adding this city to their collection of overseas naval bases (which

eventually included Gibraltar, Capetown, Hong Kong and a failed

attempt at Toulon) and had worded the peace treaty to permit this, had they succeeded in its capture. The modern claim that the battle was meaningless because it took place in the month after the signing of the treaty, is not correct.

Artillery Hell

This is the definitive history of the New Orleans campaign and it is based on excellent sourcing as well as being an excellent read. Primary source material was used liberally in the preparation of this volume and the narrative is authoritative. Not only can this volume be considered the definitive history of the campaign and battle, it is the best overall account available.

Old myths and legends are taken to account in the narrative. The idea, which is still being kept alive in some of the less-scholarly and inaccurate books on the subject, that American riflemen were responsible for the victory is taken apart. The one American unit that was equipped and armed almost exclusively with the rifle was General Coffee's command on the far left of the American position, facing a swamp. The main British assault took place to the right of Coffee's command and it is shown conclusively in the narrative that Coffee's troops scarcely fired a shot.

Further, the commands of Generals Carroll and Adair, which bore the brunt of the British attack were musket-armed for the most part, which takes the rifle out of consideration as the biggest killer in this action. However, the overwhelming killer on the battlefield of Chalmette was the American artillery, which swept the field and was acknowledged by British eyewitnesses as the decisive factor in the British repulse in an action that lasted about twenty-five minutes. The inspection of the battlefield and the British dead confirmed that most of the wounds inflicted were from artillery. This action was the first artillery battle on the North American continent.

This volume is highly recommended for any historian, enthusiast, or researcher on the battle and campaign. It is a scholarly work, yet written in a style that is very entertaining and that will keep the reader's interest. Originally published in 1974, it has not been surpassed since and for any student of the period this is the best on the subject and is an excellent example of how military history should be written.

Gray Suit to Upper Crust Life

Sometimes when I read Wilson's books I get the feeling of deja vu. All seem to be off the same boilerplate. All seem to follow the same plots, with the same protagonists and others.

Why, then, do I like them?

I guess I just enjoy Wilson's POV on life around him.

Gray Suit was a classic, with an even better film effort. 'A Summer Place' did the same. 'All The Best People' came next and was roundly panned by critics. Its sales were not very good. It was if the public said, 'Ok, we get it' and went about their business. Wilson never had a big hit book after Summer Place, and this work was the start of that fall. Yet, his books continued to come out every few years or so. And, almost all seemed the same.

Yet, I feel Wilson does a good job here. He works the theme to death (and then some) but manages to keep your interest by making its hero a likable guy who you want to 'make it'. Even though the characters are all from the upper class, old Eastern Money as we used to call it in Connecticut, it's easy to inject yourself into the story and even identify with it. That was Wilson's knack: making this kind of lifestyle interesting and, through his characters, one you wouldn't mind being a part of. We'd be seriously lost without his character guiding us through this (very different) world of the elite. We'd be hard pressed, indeed, to like them or their world.

The world of Wilson's novels, that of the Post WWII upper class in New England is for the most part still there but not nearly as important as it was then. To make it in that world, at that time, was a really big deal and a world most Americans would have recognized from movies, books and radio of the era. While Wilson's character/protagonist is supposed to be based on his life, always on the fringes of this class he was, nevertheless, letting us in on a secret. Back then the details of this lifestyle weren't well known. Wilson wrote about that lifestyle from first hand experience. He knew what he was writing about. His books began to read more and more like soap operas and did not reach the wide number of readers of his first two major books. By 1970 with that theme played out Wilson became focused on boats, the water and getting away from that lifestyle. This book is his last real attempt to connect to it.

I really enjoy, heck, look forward to setting aside time to reading this book. I think you'll feel the same. Finally, I recommend this book to younger folks trying to get an idea of what upper crust life was like then, and to see how those people lived and how they walked the earth. It can give them some perspective on their own lives.

Sloan Wilson is a wonderful writer. He molded a young boy into a man and built his character according to the times. Wish I could find more books by this author, hard to find.

Not what I expected

Although Wilson is an incredible writer. I personally enjoy his novels, because not many people are able to capture true human essence in it's raw state and not lose it's potency on paper. He also teaches life lessons in very discreet, but practical ways. However, I was disappointed with the characters in this book. After reading A Summer's Place, I was left with the impression his other novels would blatantly express the consequences and woes of man, but I didn't expect their actions to be so detailed in this novel. What I'm saying is that if you are married and live a morally clean life and expect fairly "clean" reading then beware of the promiscousness in this book (not much but it can be unnerving). I would like to note that his characters always pay or are punished in some form for their course and decisions in life. However, this was just a little too worldly from my point of view.

Compassion and Sensibility

I was asked to read this book as part of my training program as an art therapist a few years ago and I fell in love with it. It's as relevant to me today, as I am making my first steps in the field. It focusses on the existential angle of art therapy and is full of dialogues with patients and study cases , brought in an informal way. Mr. Moon is first and foremost an equal human being and only then an art therapist. He includes reference to his own journey as reflected through his own creative process. I will end with a quote: "Creation does not ease but rather ennobles the pain."

This book is clearly written with great examples of his therapeutic practice that gave me as one hoping to study Art Therapy this year an insight in the width of opportunities to interact with themes, timing, listening, co-creating and self examination. It reminds me of good yoga and conversations I have with my mother (living well with dementia) that expand into wonderful and unexpected places.
