Poorly written essay of student sold by author

Should be titled- Author Ethics: Crisis in Education. I was very disappointed in the quality of the content and definitely irritated about spending $25 for this dribble. The book was nothing more than a poorly written student's essay, re-hashing outdated information, sold as a new edition. It contained numerous errors (misspellings and incorrect words) and even included one of my pet peeves the word "irregardless", which even spell check knows is not a word. Had this not been required reading for a test I would have considered it a total waste of money! Actually, I think my IQ was lowered by read this.

Gypsy Cop information inaccurate!!

Your sadly misinformed Mr. Barker or do not hold all of the facts about which you are writing. In your section on "Gypsy Cops" you referenced a Montgomery County Sheriff who also worked for Dickson County in Tennessee. If you had ALL the facts this police officer was NEVER convicted of ANY crime thus that would explain why he was able to be hired by another agency. And the reason he was let go from Dickson County was because "someone" from Montgomery County found out he was working in Dickson and made a huge to do about it. NONE of the supposed incidents were ever proven to be fact and they were harassing the officer because they had it in for him! I believe it would be your duty before you spew misinformation and draw conclusions that you would know all the facts before printing them in your book. You are trying to make a case that is just not accurate and VERY misleading! You should take the time to interview the officer that you are accusing as well!!! What is sad and should also be discussed is how an officer can give 18 years of his life, be injured several times in the line of duty and be an outstanding officer with numerous awards and politics get in the way. For a department to not stand by an officer until all facts are known is reprehensible!! I think an appropriate book would be on the corruption and political games that are played with the upper positions within a law enforcement agency and what happens if an officer doesn't agree with them!!! If you did some real investigation you might find all the corruption that exists in these agencies from the upper up!!! How officers are told to not write tickets to certain citizens because they are donors to their campaigns or how a Montgomery County Sheriff can be elected and not have the legal right to even hold the position. That's a real story Mr. Barker!! And no why would an officer have to lose his certification if he has not been convicted legally of ANY crime!!!! Check the officers police record before you say he shouldn't be allowed to keep his certification!!

How little we knew

I grew up in Irvington and went to school with the daughter of one of the top men of this family. We had no idea what her family's secret life was until it hit the newspapers in the 70's. We were all shocked. We were in this person's home and in the home of her cousin in Vailsburg and spent countless hours together sleeping over each other's houses. I didn't read this book until I was an adult and the book had been out for a year or so. Certainly, none of the graphic details of this book made it into the Irvington Herald or the Newark Star Ledger. Yes, it's graphic and I find the person a complete coward for spilling his guts in order to go into the witness protection program. He is a cold blooded murderer and should have been given no lenience whatsoever. He made the papers some time ago for supposedly attempting to run for some type of government office where he lived. Not only did I know this family, but the two men with the same first name but different color last names were acquaintances of my father. I never knew this until I was an adult with children of my own. He told me stories that made the hairs on my neck stand up. My sympathies go to my friend who went through terrible scrutiny for something she had nothing to do with. She was an innocent child and teenager. After she divorced, she kept her married name because she did not want to face the embarrassment of carrying a name that had such horrid memories. This book is extremely graphic and shows you exactly the type ruthless, cold blooded people they truly are. Anyone who glorifies organized crime should read this book.

I REMEMBER THE STORIES !!!!

I grew up in Irvington, NJ and knew most of the people in this book. Everyone was related to someone back then. Even my mom's hairdresser is the wife of one of the men. This book, although upsetting, brings back memories....good, bad and indifferent. I have read this book 4 times at different stages of my life and STILL find it fascinating. Ira Peznick, the man who tells the story (the one who rats them out) did it all for his OWN profit. He was a murderer just the same as those he squealed on yet he gets protection!! Go figure!! The book is True, the people are REAL, the places are CORRECT, the memories still HAUNT. The families still feel SHAME....I KNOW!! The stories have been passed down over the years and the men involved, (if not dead already) still feel remorse. All those from NEWARK, IRVINGTON, BELLEVILLE, THE ORANGES, and NEW JERSEY IN GENERAL SHOULD READ THIS BOOK!!

Wild and Bold Statements Made but No Scientific Validity & Poorly Written

This was a textbook thrust upon me as a student of Horovitz's, and there are some Art Therapy assessments in this book that she herself created and strongly implies throughout this book that her assessments are widely accepted in the AT community....except there's been zero replication studies or validity studies of any of her assessments. So there's no science to back her claims about her assessments, although she makes bold claims that her assessments are able to do and predict all kinds of things. There are spelling errors and grammatical errors in some locations, and this book offers only a very brief, and at times incomplete, overview of how to set up and conduct Art Therapy assessments from widely known AT assessments to very obscure ones....to her own. If you value your reputation as a clinician look elsewhere.

During graduate school, David Lester s publications informed both my dissertation research and my service as a counsellor, trainer and administrator in a crisis intervention organisation (Lester, 1970; Lester & Brockopp, 1973; Slaikeu, Lester, & Tulkin, 1973). Four decades later, a search of PsycINFO and Academic Search Complete in September 2014 revealed that Lester has more than 1900 publications on the topic of suicide. At least 168 of those resources note significant points relating to men, and 192 or more of them highlight considerations especially relevant for women, including two edited books that focus on women (Canetto & Lester, 1995; Lester, 1988). His 2014 edited book puts the spotlight on men. As has been true with many of his publications, Suicide in Men is not solely the work of Lester. Although he authored or co-authored 12 of the 27 chapters, John Gunn and Paul Quinnett joined him as co-editors and chapter contributors, and there are 14 additional chapter authors. The authors are a diverse group in terms of both nationality and professional affiliation. Disciplines and academic departments represented include psychology, sociology, anthropology, social work, criminology, criminal justice, law, psychiatry, health science, nursing, public health and educational sciences. Past and current countries of residence include Australia, Belgium, China, Norway, Uganda and the USA.
The book s preface offers a succinct review of previous publications focusing on men and suicide, and then it compares the current volume to those earlier works. The primary distinctions noted by the editors involve inclusion of the following topics relating to suicide in men: epidemiological factors, risk factors, kinds of suicidal behaviour and possible ways to increase the effectiveness of suicide prevention efforts. The book has
presentations and discussions of scholarly research, accounts written by suicidal men and boys, relevant examples gleaned from news media, as well as material based on personal experiences of the authors. They analyse the information with regard to what is known and what remains to be discovered regarding suicide in men.
For academicians, researchers and students interested in patterns and in population trends displayed by suicidal men, the book provides research reviews of multiple areas, as well as identification of questions and issues in need of further research. For practitioners and students interested in information that can be used with service recipients, there is the potential to gain insights regarding both common themes seen in suicidal men and unique considerations relevant to a variety of specific groups and populations.

(The most notable possible exception is China.) A major cross-cultural factor contributing to higher suicide rates for men is having hegemonic masculine values attitudes ascribed to the ideal man such as strength, physical prowess, courage, independence, competition, success, financial prosperity and control. Related contributing conditions include higher rates of substance abuse and lower willingness to seek help during times of distress. To increase the utilisation of relevant services by men in distress, the editors suggest that mental health professionals enhance their skills in recognising signs of suicidal risk among men; community members could also be educated with regard to the helpfulness of available interventions in addressing issues associated with suicidal thoughts. The editors provide examples of how specific organisations are educating men on those and similar issues. Complete but difficult

Medical Injuries in the Martial Arts. What could be more useful? Not this book. Have a muscle strain? A "...frequent complaint in the martial arts"? No problem! Just note:

**"The posterior muscle mass is more commonly traumatized, and in severe cases, may be indistinguishable from ligamentous sprain or fracture. Therefore a history of the injury mechanism often obtainable from the the instructor and careful neurologic and radiographic examination may be required..." **

I picked this page at random. Really.

Of course you could say: "Neck strain is a common, and it's difficult to tell how serious it may be. You may want to get an X-ray and tell the ER doctor exactly how it happened so he could rule out nerve damage." But hey, where's the fun in that?

Oh wait: this book is supposed to be for the layman, perhaps the Sensei, to be familiar with possible injuries and quickly refer to them and advice on what to do next. Most every injury listed, regardless of how minor, is recommended to visit a doctor, get expensive tests, and is treated as if it were a major event. Therefore, there is no need for this book, as its own advice is to throw it out and visit the E.R.

Can it be useful? Sure. If you can translate the above passage without hesitation, and can walk-back with common sense how serious an injury may or may not be, and distinguish it from the dozen similar injuries listed. But it's not a quick first-aid guide. Nor a doctor's guide. Nor a guide on how people may be seriously injured by karate moves, either to cause or prevent them. Not sure what they're aiming for.

Complete and accurate. Readable, not over long, thus 3-stars. But make your own choice about the practicality of this guide in your dojo library.

After purchasing numerous books on potential injuries and preventitive measures, this book stands head and shoulders above the rest as an exceptional resource. It lists a variety of techniques used in martial arts and the resulting injuries and options to repair the body. It is logically broken down by body area (head, neck, etc.) and easy to follow and use. Whether you are a practitioner, Sensei or Doctor, you will find this information very very helpful. I highly recommend it.

Good for everyone interested in penitentiary psychology

Great book for those interested in penitentiary psychology. Many psychology graduates have no idea what a psychologist in a prison does. The author gives his first had account of his experience as a prison psychologist, discusses many myths and misconceptions about this type of work.

Interesting and informative, especially in the context of scarcity of books on the subject.

Correctional psychology is one area where clinical psychology and criminal justice converge. Yet, what actually happens to criminal defendants who are sentenced to prison? Who is concerned with their mental health? Why should we even care?
In this volume, psychologist Kevin Correia provides an insider's look into the practice of correctional psychology. The book provides an overview of prison life, which is generally both less volatile and more complex than the garish portrayals shown in movies and on TV. The book helps clarify the often dicey institutional status of a mental health practitioner working in an institutional setting where the primary concern of most other staff is just to keep the lid on. Roles of the correctional psychologist include management consultant (and here, psychologists can score points with skeptical prison staff by providing practical tips on dealing safely with inmates); suicide, violence, and sexual assault prevention; hostage negotiation; family and employee crisis intervention; and psychotherapy, which is likely to be concrete and focused, e.g. substance abuse counseling or sex offender treatment.
The book dives into the nitty-gritty nuances of conducting psychological interventions with prison inmates, including issues of privacy in the fishbowl environment of a correctional facility; developing a healthy skepticism and professional distance to guard against inmate manipulativeness; handling deception and malingering; coping with threats and intimidation; and dealing with severely mentally ill and coldly psychopathic inmates, all the while endeavoring to develop some kind of working therapeutic relationship; The author also provides guidelines for integrating psychological services with the activities of other staff members, so as to forge a collaborative, rather than adversarial, relationship with the people he or she has to work with every day.
Aside from a somewhat overly detailed two-chapter digression on the clinical and psychometric assessment of malingering, this book is crisply written and is suffused with a sense of enthusiasm and optimism that has the reader questioning the standard view of prison psychology as either the wasteful coddling of unrepentent career criminals, or as some baleful professional purgatory that a psychologist might find him- or herself consigned to until a "real" job comes along. Relentlessly realistic, this book nevertheless delineates the important clinical contributions that correctional psychologists can make in a world that most dismiss as hopeless.

It did not take me long to finish reading this book. The book is very easy to understand, and very organized in content. It has lots of good points as the "basic rules" for therapeutic staff working in correctional facilities. I have highlighted the valuable information for my own use. I also showed this book to my boss, who thinks it a wonderful book, also.
