This is a great book. There are a lot of great photos in here, and a lot of pathologies that I cannot find any information on elsewhere. It is also well organized, by bone, so it is great as a quick reference for lab and field.

When studying paleopathology, knowing what you are looking at, and what you are looking for is paramount. However you do not always have a good sample collection, and this book is a good resource to have. It is definitely needed for the study of disease in ancient populations.

I can't believe they're even selling it like this...

The photographs in this book are of an apallingly bad quality - ironic, considering it's a "Photographic Atlas". The photos aren't just grainy, they look like low-quality photocopies, which seriously cripples the book's utility as a diagnostic guide. I'm sure the text is great, but I assumed this book was intended as a quick reference guide (owing to the title "Regional Atlas"). Definately not worth the price.

A triumph

I have enjoyed Gilbert & Sullivan's plays since I was a little girl. I watched performances of their comic operas that my family taped off of public television, but I never knew much about the men who wrote these wonderfully entertaining operas. Just recently I had an opportunity to give a presentation on Gilbert and Sullivan's operas for a college course. This book was the first one I picked up and it turned out to be the only one I needed. This well-written book gives an entertaining account of the lives of these great men. The book also paints a vivid picture of what life and, more importantly, the theater were like when Gilbert & Sullivan began their collaboration. I highly recommend this book to anyone who would like to learn more about Gilbert & Sullivan, Victorian life, or English theater.

GILBERT & SULLIVAN AND THEIR VICTORIAN WORLD reads like a long article in a reception-room magazine, with ambition no greater than to tell the story of this amazing partnership. But on its own terms, this is a very successful book, providing this reader with several nights of upbeat diversion.

GILBERT & SULLIVAN begins with quick chapters on early Victorian theater and the backgrounds of Gilbert and Sullivan. Then, it plunges into the operas, giving each a chapter that discusses the libretto, the creation of the music, and the opening-night triumph (usually). In counterpoint, it tells the story of a sometimes difficult professional relationship--Gilbert was cantankerous while Sullivan believed his musical gifts were underused in comic opera. Anyone who has seen the movie Topsy-Turvy has the gist.

Of course, the genius of Gilbert and Sullivan is in their operas, where lies the best opportunity to appreciate their work. But for those interested in the back story, this book is a pleasant guide with interesting pictures on almost every page. For maximum enjoyment, read with G&S playing on your sound system. Then, you might hear...

The beginning chapters describe several abstract 'models' followed by a chapter which presents John Bowlby's attachment theory and his concept of 'internal models,' which reflect individuals' core perceptions of themselves and others; finally, the book includes a discussion of James Prochaska's stages of change model which describes the ways in which individuals proceed to make changes in their own behavior and functioning. The book presents a unified view of change in life as it occurs external to, and within, the person and concludes with a discussion of ways the individual can consider these various concepts in efforts to make change. The book is appropriate for three audiences. First, the volume is suitable for mental health professionals for whom the book can provide a unique view of the change process in the treatment they offer and they might request that their patients read the book. Second, the book is relevant for individuals interested in a process of self-change, whether they are contemplating or are in a psychotherapeutic relationship or simply want to make changes in themselves on their own. Third, the book is also relevant for managers in organizations who deal with the concepts of change in the individuals they supervise.

A well researched book about Floyd Collins.

In the 1920's Floyd Collins was trapped in a small, narrow and confining cave in Ky near Mammoth Cave. The book details the efforts to rescue him until he died several days later. The authors also entered the cave and photographed the current condition of the cave, giving the reader an idea of why the rescue failed.

A powerful book. It completly removed from my mind any idea I may of had about crawling around in caves.

Understanding all aspects of Case Management with ease

While preparing for the CCM Exam I ordered Suzanne Powell's book and have found it an "easy read." Ms. Powell has found a way to convey all aspects of case management without losing the reader's interest. Occasionally Ms.Powell's sense of humor shines through, for example her introduction to Informed Consent on p. 153. Thanks for increasing my knowledge with this interesting book.

Pretty much like the rest

There are several texts that cover the topic of criminal profiling and most say the same thing. This text is OK in that it covers the topic from the blend of sociology and psychology. So in reading, you will be introduced not only to the internal mind set of the criminal, but also to the environmental issues, the sociological impact, on the individual. It is pretty much like the rest of these texts and that is unfortunate; the same cases, the same rutted thinking. So if you are looking for a book to cover the usual almost intro level stuff in profiling this book is fine. If you are looking for more, not sure you will find it...anywhere.

A refreshing and honest change!!!

After reading for several years the virtual propaganda that seems to have become the unfortunate norm in the field of criminal profiling a book has finally emerged which honestly and most importantly - objectively - canvasses all of the work in this area. Without a doubt this book is a significant triumph for anyone who seriously wants to 'learn' about criminal profiling as opposed to simply reading the usual aggrandizing rubbish so many authors in this field seem to produce. The book gives readers an excellent insight into the field and explains the strengths and weaknesses of the research - warts and all. For its objectivity alone I would give this book 10/10.

About the Author
Michael Beechem, MSW, Ph.D., is a faculty member in the Division of Social Work and Aging Studies at the University of West Florida. He serve for nine years as the University’s Director of the Center on Aging and continues to administer the Aging Studies Program. Before his current appointment, he assumed several positions in varied social services agencies providing substance abuse and mental health services. In addition, he served as the Director of Mental Health Outreach Services for a five-county region in South Texas. Dr. Beechem is an engaging speaker who has conducted numerous workshops and talks in the grieving process within the context of elderly alcoholism.
