Real-life solutions

This book does a great job of telling the reader about what really happens in the adoptive process.
In my own family (2 adopted siblings), I know that if adopted kids' issues are not addressed in a healthy manner, the issues can become time bombs just waiting to explode. I wish my parents had had access to this book when my siblings were younger. I think it would have helped both my parents and my siblings realize what was going on and how to address issues unique to the adoption process.
This book is not techie - it is very straightforward - like you're talking with someone over the dinner table.

For all members of the Triad

Anyone who is touched by adoption should be reading this book. Adoptees, hand it to your parents and let them see that some of those annoying things you do are related to the fact you are adopted, then apologize!
For adoptive parents: this should be handed out as a guidebook when you adopt, there is so much you can do to educate yourselves and prepare, this is a great start!
As an adult adoptee I found myself splattered throughout these pages, and grinning or wincing as appropriate. There were a few times I wished I could hand it to my Mom and say- "see, it wasn't your fault, you did all you could". I am sending her a copy!
For birthparents: it might help to read this before your reunions, giving yourself some real insight into the patterns of behavior you may encounter, and know they have real base for existence.
For adoptees: I am one of those people who is tired of hearing others blame their parents for their adult behaviors, I think if anything, this can help us recognize some of our own negative patterns and maybe strive to overcome them.
There is joy and pain in this book,laughter, and maybe some tears, but that is life, and we all benefit from living it. Enjoy!

This book is a must-read for all potential adoptive parents. You can't possibly know the questions to ask your adoptees as they go from babyhood through adolescence because you have no idea what they are thinking and feeling. This book will prepare you for anything and everything.
I am a birthmom of 39 years ago. I have met my son's adoptive parents. They are fine people who have raised him with all the right spiritual and moral values. I have sent this book to them and hope they will read and perhaps be able to understand and learn from it.
Barbara raised both adoptive and biological children so has seen life from their very different perspectives. She is truly able to advise and counsel on the experiences all families deal with in adoptive families.

Antiwar Memoir of Bereaved Farm Family

Bryan was a journalist and author during the mid-twentieth century, and Friendly Fire, which originally began as a story for the New Yorker and grew into something more, tells the story of the Mullen family and their response to the death of Michael, a clean-cut young man that answered his draft notice, dutifully served and was killed by friendly fire not long after he was sent to Vietnam. Thanks goes to Open Road Integrated Media and to Net Galley for the invitation to read and review. This is right up my alley and I found it compelling. It was published digitally May 10, 2016 and is now available for purchase.

Michael Mullen was the favorite son of Iowan farmers Gene and Peg Mullen, working farmers steeped in traditional values and respect for authority, who had never questioned the US involvement in Vietnam. If the government said that US forces were fighting there to contain the spread of communism and keep Americans safe, then it must be so. Michael was the kind of young man that called people “ma’am” and “sir”. When his effects were delivered to his family following his death, there were no fewer than three rosaries he’d carried on his person. He had expected to return from service, as his father had done from an earlier war, and inherit the family farm. His family was part of the Silent Majority to which governmental authorities referred when defending the role of the USA in Indochina.

In short, they were the last people anyone would have expected to see become anti-war activists.

Michael’s death rocked parents Peg and Gene, and their grief eventually alienated them from the three children left to them. The part of their story that galvanized me was in reading their intelligent, sharp responses during the initial period following their bereavement. For many of us facing the loss of any loved one—and the death of a child is the worst loss of all—ferreting out information about that person’s days, weeks, even months is our last link to them. But Peg and Gene took it to another level when they realized that some of the information they had received was untrue. Peg became an organizational whirlwind, searching for the names and stories of other Iowa boys that had died in that conflict and she realized that the casualties that were being reported to and in the media were incorrect. The responses she received from everyone from US officials to the parish priest were so insensitive, so baldly insulting that she and husband Gene made the war and those near their son when he died into an immense research project, reaching out to newspapers and television news widely. This reviewer grew up during this period and when I read that Peg was on the phone with national newscaster Chet Huntley’s secretary in New York, my jaw dropped! In this era before satellites gave us phones in our pockets and information available at the touch of a keyboard, they typed letters, made long-distance phone calls, and in time even traveled to Washington D.C. in order to know how and why their son had been killed and who was to blame.

The fifth star here is denied because the beginning of the story, which goes into overmuch detail about the family’s genealogical beginnings and its long history in Iowa soil, is deadly dull. When the book was first published, the video game had not yet been invented and readers had longer attention spans. Today if a book does not hook a reader from the start, chances are excellent it will be immediately and forever abandoned. Although the point that the Mullen farm had stood for five generations is surely relevant to the story, the author drags this portion of the story out sufficiently to glaze even the eyes of this history teacher, and together with an awkward introduction that appears to substitute for a bibliography or endnotes, a lot of readers won’t get to the interesting part, and that’s a crying shame.

Ultimately the Mullens’ cause alienated them from their community, probably because they were so free in dispensing blame to everyone that drew breath. Everyone that had not actively opposed the war was called out at some point. The heat of their rage and grief lacked focus. In many ways they undid a lot of the good they had done by cursing old friends and neighbors simply because they had never done anything about the war.

The story will interest those that research conspiracies. The Mullens believed more deception was in play than actually was, yet when a person knows he has been lied to about one thing, it is the intelligent thing to do to wonder how much more one was told is also untrue. And so as they relentlessly sought to find one particular officer that might be to blame for the friendly fire that killed their son, I wanted to bang my head on the wall, because it was so much more than that; the conspiracy, we know now, was seated in the Oval Office, jotting more names, possibly their own, onto his enemies’ list. Targeting this soldier or that minor officer was just wrong-headed, but when people are hurt, they lash out, and the Mullens did so exponentially.

The end of the book deals with the author’s own motivation in following the Mullens and their search for the truth so diligently; nevertheless, it seemed strange to find a host of author photos at the end of the book rather than of the Mullen family.

Had the editing of this digital edition been given to me along with permission to do anything I wished, I would have tightened up the beginning, put the author’s notes at the end of the book rather than the start, and deleted the photo section entirely.

Nevertheless, those with an interest in the struggle to end the US war in Vietnam will find this story well worth reading, and to them I recommend this memoir.

Friendly Fire, Unfriendly Followup

C. S. Lewis in one of his books opines that evil is not done in the sordid dens of iniquity so prominent in the writings of Dickens but rather it is conceived and ordered in clean, carpeted, warm and well-lighted offices. He adds that his symbol for Hell is something like a bureaucracy. I wonder what Lewis would have said about Hell after reading Friendly Fire.
The Mullen family certainly found the government bureaucracy a rather hellish place when they tried to find out how their son died in Vietnam. What they eventually found, what was not readily forthcoming, was their son had died due to a misfired mortar from American artillery. The Mullens spent the years after the death of their son, Michael, on a mission to find out what happened and to protest the War in Vietnam. (They used Michael’s death benefit to buy an ad protesting the war.)
The story told by the author is well researched and presented in a readable way. It is, in my opinion, written from a position of detachment. The author does not take a side in the debate over the war itself. He certainly must have experienced frustration about the obfuscation of the bureaucrats but he also took the Mullens to task for false information that fueled their anger.
Mr. Bryan was given time to interview those who were in country at the time of Michael’s death, including Norman Schwarzkopf, then a Lt. Colonel. He interviewed those who were with Michael when he died and he reconstructs as accurately as possible the last night of Michael Mullen.
Reading this book took me back to those years. I was in Washington D.C. during the early years of the war. I was quite familiar with the protests including the in“ hog”auration of President Nixon. I was also able to hear Senator Mark Hatfield give his views on the war. However, like most young people at that time, I had friends and classmates in Vietnam. For me the soldiers were not agents of the military industrial complex, they were people with names and faces.
I appreciated the sensitivity of the author in presenting this story of real people, those who left and those who waited.

Utterly brilliant book about the perils of war

Utterly brilliant book about the perils of war; the tragedy of friendly fire; and the agony of parents trying to come to terms with the death of a beloved son. Also, a stunning portrait of an early Stormin' Norman Schwarzkopf before he became a Four Star general and an international household name in the Persian Gulf War. It was Schwarzkopf who ordered the artillery shell that accidentally killed Michael Mullen and one other soldier in Vietnam. C.D.B. Bryan is a masterful writer, and this is a magnificent book.

It is no secret that the questions in this book will prepare you well for the Medical Physiology course offered at the Univ of Tennessee College of Medicine. As Dr. Schneider himself often states, "I can only ask the same question so many ways." If you are enrolled at UT and want a good book to prep for the course then search no farther. If you are looking for a qood question book for the Boards, I would recommend the NMS series of System based question books or the Kaplan Q-bank.

Great Physiology Review

This book contains 900 good review questions, and the reasons behind the answers. These questions are at the level of difficulty for a first year medical student. If you are running out of study time, the questions and explanations cover the topics so well that even if they are read in a "cramming session" you can still learn some physiology

Howard featuring his sword and sorcery hero, Conan the Cimmerian. It was one of the last Conan stories published before Howard's suicide although not the last to be written. The novel was first published in serial form in the pulp magazine Weird Tales in 1935 through 1936. This edition an afterword by editor Karl Edward Wagner and "Map of the Hyborian World" (1977) drawn by John Mayer.

In addition to "The Hour of the Dragon", this edition also contains "Red Nails","Jewels of Gwahlur","Beyond the Black River","The Black Stranger","Wolves Beyond the Border(draft),"The Phoenix on the Sword",and "The Scarlet Citadel".This is the second volume of a 2 part set reprinting all of Howard's Conan stories in chronological order (volume 1 is People of the Black Circle). It's unfortunate that the publisher did not simply title them the Conan Chronicles Volume 1 and 2, instead of creating confusion by calling them People of the Black Circle and Hour of the Dragon. It's obvious that most of the people reviewing the book haven't read this edition but are just writing to say that they enjoyed reading Conan the Conqueror as a kid. Well that's fine and dandy, but you are not helping the people who already own the series published by DeCamp and Carter and want to know if it's worthwhile to buy this too. Well let me reassure everyone that indeed this is worth buying because it is THE ONLY place that collects ALL of the Howard Conan stories EXACTLY AS HE WROTE THEM,arranged in CHRONOLIGICAL ORDER of Conan's career, WITHOUT those awful pastiches by DeCamp and Carter mixed in.

Try the Original Recipe

I can't add much to the reviews already present on this page; clearly this is a book that has left a strong impression on its readers. Read the book yourself and it will be easy to see why. Howard's mastery of pace and plotting puts him in a league with the greatest "thriller" writers: Haggard, Buchan, or Wilkie Collins. Moreover, Howard's ability to bring the sights, smells, and sounds of his invented Hyborian world to vibrant life is nearly unparalled in Fantastic Fiction. He's in a league with Tolkien (who, perhaps surprisingly, liked the Conan books--score one for Tolkien) when it comes to creating a sense of depth, but Howard's world is far grittier and more sensuous.
However, while this is a great book, I'm going to be the only one to give it less than five stars. Not because Howard lacked the talent to write a five star book--he had talent to spare--but because he simply didn't have the time to make "Hour of the Dragon" as good as it should have been. There are passages that clearly could do with editing or rewriting; occasional infelicities of style; and minor inconsistencies in the plot. In spite of this, "Hour of the Dragon" will keep you up reading all night. If you've never read Howard before, you'll wonder why it's so difficult to find his books. So, pass up the pastiches and cinematic stereotypes. Give Bob Howard, of Peaster, TX a read and you won't be disappointed.

Howard's Only Conan Novel

Robert Howard wrote most of his stories for the pulp magazines so popular in Depression era America. As a result, most of his writings were short stories. Howard had many heroes (Bran Mak Morn, Black Vulmea, Red Sonja, Kull, Solomon Kane), but Conan was his best developed character, and the Conan stories were the best of his writings.
Howard got an opportunity to publish a novel in England, and he fell back on his old standby, Conan, to serve as the protagonist. Howard expected that his English audience would never have heard of Conan, so he borrowed a number of motifs from several of his short stories. Those who take the time to read all of Howard's Conan stories will recognize many of the elements in "Hour of the Dragon."
Alas, the book deal fell through, and Howard had to publish "Hour of the Dragon" in a pulp magazine.
Whatever Howard's difficulties in publishing the book, he had no difficulty in writing a wonderful tale of heroic fantasy. Conan is the ultimate sword-and-sorcery hero, and this is Conan's ultimate adventure.
If you really like Conan, you might want to compare "Hour of the Dragon" with "Conan the Conqueror," a paperback republication which was "edited" by L.Sprague DeCamp and Lin Carter. "Conan the Conqueror" is about 90% Howard, but DeCamp and Carter polished Howard's grammar and softened some passages they deemed politically incorrect. Howard's original version is more rough-hewn, but then Conan was a rough-hewn hero.

Outstanding book to learn radiology basics

This is the bible of radiology departments. GE Medical used this text in our training and everyone had to read it. Simply a fantastic primer for all modalities, radiology practice, and imaging physics. I'm told Radiologists read this book in studying for their boards. Go into many Radiology Directors and you'll see some edition of this book on their shelves. A great book if you're interested in radiology.

After he finished writing this book he compared himself with "Grandma Moses"...a brillant songwriter...who knew all the great singers and all the great singers knew him...best bio on Duke and was a bestseller in England...BUT never got any book reviews for this bio in the U.S.A.

They will both be missed ... Duke and his songwriter DON GEORGE, the author of this book.

Two Great Time Travel Novels in One

I just now finished this novel after only two days of reading - quite a feat to read a 383 page book in such a short time! As one who has a passion for social history, genealogy, and re-enacting, this work by Marlys Millhiser was right up my alley. I mean, to have the opportunity to travel back in time to meet one's ancestors, to experience life "as it was," and to know what the future would hold not only for this person but for the world, well, it tends to make the imagination run. The trouble is, in `The Mirror,' Shay Garrett had absolutely no interest in the past, much less wanting to live there. She all but ignored her mother's family history stories, and could have cared even less about the way folks lived 78 years earlier. But, due to a mysterious mirror, Shay - the very up-to-date modern girl of 1978 - unwittingly finds herself living the life of her grandmother, Brandy McCabe, 78 years earlier, in 1900.
The author did an absolute tremendous job in her social history research, giving very accurate accounts of what life was like in the year 1900, from slow travel and modes of dress to tools, furniture, bed sheets, sicknesses (like consumption, of which Shay has no idea what it is), and types of foods, as well as slow speech patterns and language usage. And poor Shay (now as Brandy) must conform to that life as well as the mores and morals of a very different time, a time when females had very little say in their lives. Miss Millhiser has used her words and research to paint a veritable picture of the past. No easy task and pretty much a rarity from many authors.
Part two of this novel shows the new life that Brandy McCabe - Shay's grandmother - must live. Since her granddaughter, Shay, has inhabited her body 78 years earlier, Brandy has now entered Shay's body 78 years into her future, in 1978.
This second part of the book is a bit disconcerting - many different and unexpected avenues are taken that, at times, I questioned where the author was going. But, what Miss Millhiser did very well once again was to describe in vivid detail the awe and wonder that the 20 year old "antiquated" Brandy (now in Shay's body) feels in this futuristic world with talking picture boxes, disco bars, automobiles, electric blankets...heck, she even learned (through a TV commercial) that she should shave her underarms and legs!
But Brandy, like her granddaughter counterpart now hopelessly living in the past, is not fond of this new (to her) world, especially with its lack of morals (as she knew them to be), scanty clothing styles (bare arms and legs!), and tasteless food.
Brandy definitely has a tougher time accepting her new role as Shay with its freedoms in 1978 than her granddaughter does in her new role as Brandy in 1900 with its constraints, which is surprising. But, I feel it is probably more realistic - morals and mores in the past were much stronger and deeper than today and I feel that Brandy would not so readily accept becoming the modern woman of today, like many others might feel she should have.
Another interesting aspect to the two stories are the way the author intertwines the two girls lives through the mysterious mirror - their visions of each other's events and reactions fit like a puzzle. While reading Brandy's story I was constantly referring back to Shay's story during the mystery mirror scenes (you'll understand once you read the book).
And finally, the middle interim for daughter/mother Rachael became a vital connection to the two stories.
Marlys Millhiser did a remarkable job spinning this time-travel tale. Considering that this is not your average historical/modern novel, I would love to know how long it took her, from her initial idea through historical research to penning and then finally to publishing. Truly amazing.

Read it at least once! Maybe twice?

This book is really hard to describe (especially without giving any spoilers...but I'll try my best). I thought it would be scarier than it was. The "Backward" at the beginning was a little spooky. But it was not really a suspense, horror, romance or thriller. At best I'd place it in the historical fiction category with time traveling. You need to pay attention while reading as it jumps around a bit, and time passes quickly in some sections. The story is split into three parts and I believe I liked the middle the least as I didn't like Rachel's character much. As a fact I didn't particularly like Shay or Brandy much either. I did like the secondary characters a lot though, especially Thora K. I would have loved it if Millhiser had gone more into the backstory of the mirror, more than what was described in the "backward." And why does it kill some people but not others?

This novel would be great for a book club. It's definitely discussion worthy. I might read it again in a few months to a year as I'll pick up on things that I may not have read the first time around.

I read this book years ago, and when I saw the title again, I remembered how good it was. So I purchased it on my kindle.
It is about a mirror, very old and very spooky, that has done damage to people for years. Various owners covered it up and hid it away over the years, but always when it was uncovered by some innocent person unaware of it's dangerous abilities, something awful happened.
In the case of Shay Garrett, she was completely unaware, and on the night before her wedding, she found herself, in front of the mirror. It warmed to the touch and a lightening storm outside cracked, Shay felt her world turn upside down and woke to find herself in the same house, but in the body of her own grandmother Brandy. From a fast car to a slow wagon, from one wedding to another, this time to a complete stranger, she had to learn how to survive in this different time period.
Marlys Millhiser wrote many good books. The Mirror is one of them.

What Everyone Interested in Art Therapy Should Have

This new history of art therapy in the US by Maxine Borowsky Junge, is the perfect follow-up to her original 1994 text (with Paige P. Asawa) titled, "A History of Art Therapy in the United States." If you have the first text, you will certainly want to get this new one with all its updated and expanded material. If you have never obtained the initial text, you will still want to get this latest book. You will find that it gives you everything you need or want to know about the continuing development of the unique profession of art therapy. In the interests of full-disclosure, I must mention that I am one of a very few who have contributed chapters to this book. However, this hardly diminishes the fact that this new text is a testament to Dr. Junge's exceptional scholarship, her diligence and respect for history, and her long and highly esteemed experience in the field of art therapy. It has important facts and insights to offer the seasoned professional and those just starting out in the profession, the art therapy educator and her or his students, and anyone who is interested in the field for whatever reason. And in addition to all that, it is a decided pleasure to read!

I'm sure you have gotten my message by now, but just in case you haven't, I'll end by saying I give this book my very highest recommendation!

The book is full of great information but HORRIBLY written

The book is full of great information but HORRIBLY written. I'm seriously editing as I go -- I have half a mind to send it back to the publisher in case they do another edition. It's filled with horrific comma usage, fragments, run-ons, and just exceptionally bad grammar all around. If you can get past all that, the information within the text is wonderful. But be ready to cringe as you read.

I was actually really disappointed when I received the book

This book was a requirement for a class and since there were no used copies for a reasonable price anywhere online or in stores, I begrudgingly purchased a new copy for $60. I was actually really disappointed when I received the book. The words were in large, elementary print and the pages were thick. I'm always careful with my books and keep them in the best possible condition. However, after only one week of light use the first few pages started to separate from the binding and fall out. I know it's because the pages are so thick, which to me is a poor design for a textbook, but the quality of book wasn't the only thing that left me feeling less than content. I didn't think the author did a very good job with presenting unbiased research. Rather, she often includes her opinions, whether intentionally or not, and I was left wanting after some less than lacking descriptions and definitions. The only reason I'm grading this book so low is because it's presented and priced as a scholarly textbook for students but the overall design is not. Needless to say, I would never have paid $60 for this book if it weren't a requirement. I don't understand what justifies this book being $60 (and this is the cheapest price anywhere) other than it being a way to get college students to spend the money that they don't have.
