This is probably the most comprehensive book on Blunt Force Trauma on the market. This book is not for beginners or for forensic hobbyists. But for all forensic anthropology/osteology academics out there, it is worth the price.

Second, he asserts that special education strategies are not equally effective across socioeconomic status, English language proficiency, and ethnicity. Finally, he calls into question many of the professional practices of teachers, psychologists, administrators, and professors who serve exceptional populations. The author provides many personal accounts of events and experiences that capture the essence of what he speaks of in this book. The content of this book is information to which all educators working with ethnically, culturally and linguistically diverse children should have access. It is informative and presented in a no-nonsense fashion. The reader learns a great deal about practices that do indeed impede the academic achievement and school success of students with special needs from minority and traditionally underrepresented groups. The text can be used as supplemental reading in pre-service courses for general or special education. It is easy to read and cites many examples to reduce any possibility of misinterpretation. Teacher educators will find it especially useful as a tool to generate discussion on the difficult and threatening topics and issues associated with discrimination in public education as a whole and special education in particular. It will be of interest to special educators and administrators at all levels.

About the Author
Herbert Grossman has worked in special education as classroom teacher, clinical psychologist, and teacher trainer. He has been a member of the faculty of fourteen universities in the United States and abroad in the departments of special education, psychology, and psychiatry. And, he has guest-lectured at more than one hundred universities. Doctor Grossman has taught and consulted in Latin America, Africa, and Europe under the auspices of such organizations as UNESCO, the Fulbright Commission, Project Hope, and the International Foundation for Education and Self Help. He directed the multicultural and bilingual special education programs at San Jose State University for sixteen years. This is his sixth book about special education.

Excellent reference for fire investigators

This is one of the only books I've found that addresses electrical fire investigation with detail. The author draws upon years of experience as a fire investigator and passes them on to the reader with exceptional detail. I have used this book many times as a reference in legal cases and reports. I also appreciate the accuracy of engineering description the author uses to make sure that you don't come to false conclusions. This is a must have reference for anyone in this profession.

This book is not worth the money. Information is very basic, hard to read, no photos, and just plain regurgitated information on electricity. Not a forensic book on electrical causes for fire investigations and should not be advertised as such !!!

The titular term foundations could go in at least two different directions when it comes to a work related to counseling. On the one hand, foundations could refer to the core techniques of the practice. On the other, it could mean the grounds upon which counseling is even possible. Illovsky chose the latter option when composing his book. In an effort to make his contribution distinct from other similar introductory works, Illovsky labors valiantly to incorporate cross-cultural perspectives into his account.

Especially in the first half of the book, Illovsky seeks to explains, at a preliminary level, how it is that people are able to engage in counseling behaviors. He covers areas such as evolution altruistic behaviors in animal species as well as how such behaviors may have aided ancient humans genetics, neurology, and sociological aspects of human life (3-12).

Doing this multilayered work is necessary for Illovsky s implicit argument that counseling although a product of the modern West can be useful to non-Western cultures as well as the West s need to learn counseling habits from other cultures. That said, Illovsky does remind us of several things advisors would do well to remember. One involves the Pygmalion effect (a.k.a. the expectancy advantage) wherein if the client expects to be successful in therapy, the probability is increased that the client will succeed. If the client does not expect to be successful, the probability of success is decreased (36). I strongly suspect this principle holds to true for students in their approach to academic counseling. Another point worth flagging pertains to advisors habit of referring students to mental health counselors for students in psychological distress. Illovsky points to studies that challenge our cultural assumption that such counseling is noticeably beneficial for people (124-25). If these findings are accurate, they raise ethical questions about our referral practice since we are encouraging students to devout time and financial resources toward these services. Lastly, and on a more encouraging note, Illovsky s examples of how knowledge generated in non-Western cultures can have positive effects on people reminds advisors in Western cultures to pay close attention to the practices of their peers in non-Western locations when reflecting on how to improve services, especially as the student population on many campuses in western countries become increasing international in their composition. --William E. Recently, I spent some time in a high school classroom for students with moderate to intensive disabilities. Daily instruction in the classroom consisted of presenting these high schoolers with significantly modified curricula grounded in traditional, grade-level State Standards. The teacher and assistants were attempting to expose students to content that same-age peers were accessing; however, staff had been questioning the appropriateness and relevance of this content for the students and wondered how this content would affect student performance and independence post-graduation. This scenario seems to be a fairly representative occurrence in high schools throughout the country as teachers attempt to balance state standards with more pertinent and functional curriculums as warranted for particular learners. The staff in this classroom could have tremendously benefitted from reading Systematic Instruction of Functional Skills for Students and Adults with Disabilities. The book is inundated with practical strategies to facilitate evidence-based instructional methodology for learners across a range of ages and needs. Throughout the book, the ten chapters are organized with key point questions to systematically preview chapter content. Faculty could use these questions as a formative assessment for students in higher education when beginning coverage of the chapters. This text provides a counter-point to current trends in special education emphasizing grade level standards and high stakes testing for students with significant disabilities. The authors seem to understand that such students need to develop functional and independence skills to participate with others and achieve meaningful outcomes based on what they are able to do. This book is full of great tips for teaching students with moderate to severe disabilities. The Key Points help the reader identify key concepts. I love the easy to read format. The most fundamental elements of the text are offered in four chapters where, bone by bone, fracture by fracture, the authors describe what to call each kind of fracture, what is known about how much force is required to break the bone that way, and fracture specific epidemiological information. This particular section of the text provides an invaluable reference source for forensic anthropologists and other osteologists to consult when looking at and trying to classify a bone fracture. Case studies are included to bring the book full circle back to considering the micro and macro bone changes that are seen when bone fails and fractures. The case studies are illustrative both of the concepts described through the book and of the high quality analyses forensic anthropologists contribute to medicolegal investigations of death every day. Broken Bones: Anthropological Analysis of Blunt Force Trauma, Second Edition. Vicki L. Wedel and Alison Galloway, eds. Springfield, IL: Charles C. Thomas, 2014, 504 pp, $64.95, cloth.

The first edition of Broken Bones, edited by Alison Galloway, was a classic contribution to the study of blunt force skeletal trauma in the forensic context. Published in 1999, it represented the state of the field at the time and included a useful section of case studies written by forensic anthropologists, pathologists, and an odontologist. The new edition, edited by Vicki Wedel and Alison Galloway, is a significantly expanded and updated book that reflects a number of advances in the field since publication of the first edition. In many ways it is a new book, with a new set of case study contributors (Alison Galloway is the only exception, as a second author on one case study) and an extensive reworking of introductory chapters (Section I). New or significantly expanded topics include preparing for a career in forensic anthropology; field recovery methods; differentiating antemortem, perimortem, and postmortem fractures; common causes of blunt force trauma; and a new chapter reviewing experimental trauma studies and their applicability to forensic anthropology. The core structure of the first edition is retained in Section II (Chapters 8-11), which provides a detailed survey of fracture patterns in different parts of the skeleton. These chapters have been updated and expanded from the first edition but retain their basic regional approach to fracture types and morphology.
The nine case studies in the second edition are all new and represent a good mix of the challenges of identifying and interpreting blunt force trauma in the medicolegal context, with particular focus on the contributions of forensic anthropologists to such cases, Topics that are new to the second edition include identifying child abuse (Love), intimate partner violence (Juarez and Hughes), techniques for facial reconstructions in cases of fragmented and incomplete remains (Nusse), and the challenges of interpreting rib fractures (Zephro and Galloway; Love, Hines, and Wilson). Other case studies focus on interpreting the context and possible cause of death in skeletonized and fresh body cases (Crowder and Adams; Black, Smyth, Bentley, Erolin and Randolph-Quinney) and the value of both antemortem and periomortem trauma for victim identification and death investigation (Hart; Haugen). Case studies such as those in the first and second editions of Broken Bones are important in highlighting real world challenges faced by forensic investigators, and for documenting the way in which complex cases can be approached and (ideally) resolved. The limitations of skeletal analysis for reconstructing trauma and cause of death are duly noted in these case studies, but all emphasize the contributions that forensic anthropologists can make to interpreting difficult cases.
Strengths of the second edition of Broken Bones include extensively updated references and the coverage of new research areas in blunt force trauma analysis. The illustrations are of consistently high quality and serve as useful visual guides to fracture types and patterns. There are some minor problems with typos and occasionally unclear writing, but these are minor distractions in an otherwise well-written and well-organized volume. This book will be an important and useful reference for anyone approaching blunt force trauma analysis, whether a student or a practicing forensic anthropologist. To those in other forensic sciences, the volume is valuable for demonstrating the important contributions that a careful analysis of skeletal trauma can provide to medicolegal death investigators. --John W.
