Sorry Mr. Burns, I couldn't finish this book

In case you have not noticed by my previous reviews, I am a fan of Mr. George Burns and his writing. This is the fourth book written by him that I have read. Alright, I'll admit it, I attempted to read this one. I could not finish it.

Yes, he is a good story teller in this book. Yes, his humor is right on the mark. What really bothered me was the younger women that he talked about and dated. I realize that his beloved Gracie had been gone for twelve years when this book was published. I also realize that Mr. Burns had needs. That does not necessarily mean that I want to read about them or know about them and how they were fulfilled by women who were in their younger twenties. That's just nasty.

Perhaps if I read this book before I had read Gracie, a Love Story, it would not have bothered me as much. But still, there's no way that a man who is almost eighty years old should ever be dating a twenty-two girl, no matter what the circumstances are.

I recommend 100 Years 100 Stories instead.

This is an excellent and comprehensive guide to financial asset investigations. While it focuses largely on research techniques, this fourth edition also identifies some new trends that the author indicates are of growing interest to financial investigators. These include the increasing use of smartphones, which make money and information highly mobile. An overall theme in the book is to obey the law when conducting investigations. It is critical that investigators be aware of the specifics of the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act as well as other state and federal laws. The author provides guidance on obtaining asset information using numerous open sources, including county, municipal, and federal databases. He also describes the use of national database files and emphasizes the importance of knowing as much about the individual being investigated as possible, such as the subject's interests and activities. This information can help the investigator develop leads as to where the money is and how it is being used. One particularly helpful chapter describes the process of finding hidden assets. This can require identifying a subject's relatives or associates; it can also involve looking for high-end collectibles, safe deposit boxes, or overseas accounts. The author describes the investigative process in a clear and well-organized manner. The book also has an extensive index and glossary as well as an excellent bibliography and a useful investigative checklist. Excellent book. I have the 3rd

Excellent book. I have the 3rd. edition as well and this is a good followup to an already fantastic array of training material that immerses the person from start to finish the necessary steps that are needed to perform and complete a successful assets search investigation that will fulfill and satisfy their clients. It even gives you a fictional " practice " investigation that shows you step by step on what is needed, how to do search and where to search for the information as well as how to apply the data to finalize the investigative report into a comprehensive, yet easy to understand work product. I'm waiting for a hopeful updated yet even better 5th. edition

Comprehensive and a bit academic

I use this more for reference. It's very comprehensive and covers many different types of creative therapies with well written articles/chapters on each. My only con about this is that it can get a bit too academic in a sense, and with creative arts being such an experiential sort of therapy, it takes much of the real world experience out of the whole concept by being so academic. Still, it's good for really trying to understand the history and thoughts and hypotheses about creative arts therapies.

This book has many different opinions, which, when you are looking for an overview, gives you a more rounded experience. I definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for an introduction into the expressive therapies, but some prior knowledge of the arts as well as psychology is helpful.

Diehard Godfather fans play second banana to no other subculture in their obsession with the minutiae of Puzo's novel and Coppola's films. These dedicated fans will be most disappointed by the new audio version, although perhaps only an hour of material is missing, but casual aficionados will barely notice the abridgment. Missing are the subplot involving Sonny's mistress, Lucy Mancini, and Dr. William Kennedy and the descriptions of the regional Mafia chieftains that precede the commission meeting at which Don Corleone flushes out Don Barzini as his number one rival. Actor Joe Mantegna does a fine job throughout, largely resisting the temptation to put on voices for too many of the characters. However, this cannot be said for his Don Corleone. Perhaps it is vengeance: after all, Andy Garcia, as the late Don's nephew, Vincent Mancini, put the hit on Mantegna's Joey Zasa in Godfather III, but whatever the reason, Mantegna gives Corleone a raspy falsetto-imagine the Pillsbury Doughboy with a tracheotomy-that ranks as one of the worst Brando impressions ever. Also, Puzo's chilling ending in which Kay converts to Catholicism with the hope of saving her husband's soul is inexplicably transformed into a chamber-of-commerce-style bromide about the family's new life in Nevada. Still, the popularity of Puzo's novel 27 years after its publication makes this abridgment a must-have.

Awaken the DON in you!

The Godfather is, in many ways, not just a novel - it is an experience, after which your life will never be the same again. I have not the least of doubts in calling it 'the best, most influential and deep-cutting that I have ever read.' In its sheer departure from being just a general, run-of-the-mill tale about idolizing a particular individual, the novel presents to us with a ringside view of the workings of the Mafia, and more importantly, the lives of the people who are involved in it, directly or indirectly.
The novel starts off with a quote from Balzac - "Behind every great fortune, there is a crime." That, in effect, sets the tone for the entire novel. Mario Puzo, the author, ruthlessly captures the travails of a New York Don, Vito Corleone, who is, to quote the words of his son, "not a crazy gunning mobster", and his family.
Puzo presents to us an entire array of different characters - be it the short-tempered Sonny, or the dreary undertaker Bonasera, or the ever-faithful Luca, the cool-headed Tom, the 'Turk' Sollozzo, or the pleasant outsider Kay Adams, each character enters our world, refusing to leave. We are impressed by most of these essentially evil people because the story is told in an entirely closed world (of crime) and so we tend to love characters whom we would, in the normal course, detest.
The novel is, basically, about just two persons, Don Vito Corleone and his son, Michael, who after refusing to accept his father's ways, finally comes to terms with the reality and takes up the 'family business'.
Puzo shows us why he is the great author he really is! The character of the Don pervades our thoughts more than most (or almost all) other fictional characters do. Though the nature of his business is violent, the Don is portrayed as a genial, kind and reasonable man. To say the least, the Don is someone whom `every son will look for in his father, every woman will look for in her husband, and any mortal will look for in an inspirational leader.' In fact, the Godfather is what every man aspires to be - a strong, powerful and wise yet cunning genius and family man.
I have not read a better novel - chances are, you won't either! Do not miss the Godfather movies too.

Intriguing. Spellbinding.

I first read Mario Puzo's THE GODFATHER three decades ago, and the impact it had on me was overwhelming. Here was a rare novel that hooked the reader from the very first page, a novel to be savored and absorbed by the author's grim yet masterful prose.
Through the pages of this book the reader is introduced to the shadowy world of organized crime--more importantly, to the fiercely interdependent workings of the mafia. Deeply embedded in its Italian heritage, it was a culture of unspeakable violence, but it also fostered family, honor, community, loyalty, friendship. Vengeance. If you are downtrodden, or unfairly victimized, all you need do is approach one of the "families" and request a "favor." Proclaim your devotion and friendship, the favor will be granted. And then--even though it may never happen--you must be willing to return the favor.
Or suffer the consequences.
Puzo's novel brings to life the Corleone family, headed by its aging patriarch, Don Vito Corleone. In post-World War II New York, Corleone faces a changing world, but he is still plagued by the relentless "turf wars" with the other major families. Intense pressure is brought to introduce narcotics to the list of "services" provided by his family--pressure that Corleone emphatically resists, to the bleak detriment of first himself, and to those he loves. The subsequent development of the story--of the Corleone's strategy, of the emergence of one of the Godfather's sons to perpetuate the family's power and considerable clout--is spellbinding.
Few novels of the last thirty years have had any lasting effects on our cultural lexicon. THE GODFATHER is one of them. Highly recommended.

A Read You Can't Refuse!!!

Not many works of fiction can claim to have significantly changed the face of American culture; Mario Puzo's classic novel The Godfather is surely one of those. Look at the evidence: This book (and the wonderful cinematic counterpart) reintroduced the gangster as an American icon. It helped to spawn entire new genres in fiction and films. (Some critics suggest there should be an entirely new designation for this genre and have dubbed it "The Eastern".) Of course, it introduced that classic catchphrase "I'll make him an offer he can't refuse." Finally, it introduced one of the great heroic criminals into literature in the person of Don Vito Corleone (a character reportedly based on Puzo's own mother). Yes, it is true that the movie and not the novel must take much of this credit, but this work is hardly the two-star pulp trash that a few misguided critics have made it to be. It's solid all the way through, particularly the fabulous portrayals of the ruthless gentleman Don Vito and his family, epecially the sons: hotheaded Sonny (whose penchant for needless violence proves fatal), cowardly Freddie (who is spooked by the Don's near-assasination and runs away to Las Vegas), and, most memorably, cool, reserved Michael (who, in the end, proves a tactical genius truly worthy to be called his father's son.) Also, don't forget the fabulous cast of supporting characters: singers Johnny Fontaine and Nino Valenti (read: Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin), and the many minor players such as Luca Brasi and Amerigo Bonserai, who literally owe their very existence to the Don's generosity. And the women!!! Such marvels of strength, tenacity and character presented in blindly obidient Connie, questioning Kay, and the Don's own wife, who knows much more than she reveals. Her tutoring of Kay into the Sicilian way of life ends the book on a high note. Puzo makes these character studies work because he gives each person his own little spotlight; by chapter's end, you know why each one has chosen to become a family member or confidant. The chapters showing the Don's rise to power, subsequent fall, and rebirth are the highpoints of the book, as the newer, more ruthless families seek to destroy the Corleone's sacred honor by forcing them into trafficking drugs. Yes, in the end, it is Michael who prevails, but the action is so good that the climax is not spoiled by knowing the outcome in advance. The reader will want to visit this novel time and again for it's unique perspectives on honor, justice, and The American Dream.

Just another excellent book in the series from Jack's life. No matter that they're out of print - search everywhere - they're worth it. I began reading Douglas in 1959 at the age of 14. After that, I eagerly awaited each new offering and occassionally managed to catch Douglas on T.V. As I remember them (more or less in the order published and the recommended order for reading): My Brother Was an Only Child, Never Trust a Naked Bus Driver, A Funny Thing Happened on My Way to the Grave (Autobiography), Huckleberry Hashimoto, The Neighbors Are Scaring My Wolf, The Japanese Sex and Cookbook and How to Raise Wolves, Shut Up and Eat Your Snowshoes, Going Nuts in Brazil, Benjamin Franklin Slept Here, and What Do You Hear from Walden Pond. There are probably more, but if you read these one after another, you'll probably need surgery.

This sounds familiar...

Having lived near the town the fictional Granby Lakes is based on my entire life, it was certainly interesting to read this hilariously funny account of Jack Douglas's aborted attempts to make the Honeymoon Mountain Inn a successful and lucrative business. Reading this book I could picture perfectly every stroke of bad luck and every act of ill will, which all seemed typical of the local population. I'd read some of Mr. Douglas's other work, and enjoyed them all thoroughly. Benedict Arnold Slept Here was not a disappointment. My only problem is that all of Jack Douglas's books are out of print and hard to find. Their lack of availability is maddening, because they're such great books!

An excellent example of Jack Douglas' humor.

I was 12 years old when I read this for the first time (I am now 33). I have recommended this book to lots of friends over the years, and everyone has enjoyed it. Jack Douglas' sense of humor is sarcastic, ironic and, at times, morbid...which, of course, makes for great comedy!
