This information includes the innervations and attachments of each muscle, how to position the patient for examination, the appropriate site for insertion of the electrode, the depth of insertion for the electrode, and the action that the patient should perform to activate the muscle. The descriptions of the techniques used for rarely examined muscles are sufficient for a clinician to have the confidence needed to perform the procedure. Common errors in electrode placement and clinically relevant comments are illustrated and discussed, including cross-sectional illustrations on the appendicular muscles. A particularly useful inclusion is 'Pitfalls' that describes which muscle the electrode will record if the needle is placed too deep, not deep enough, or not at the location described. The text contains a useful appendix, providing dermatomes of the limb and trunk, cutaneous innervations of the head, and excellent illustrations of both the brachial plexus and the lumbo-sacral-coccygeal plexus. The appendix also contains a useful table listing all muscles that are presented in the text with innervations from the peripheral nerve to the mixed spinal nerve root. Well organized, clearly and concisely written, this book remains a learning tool and excellent reference for electromyographers and for healthcare practitioners who are expanding their practice skills to include diagnostic EMG, as well as for graduate students who use EMG as part of their research.

A Classic!

This is just a great book (witness how the few used copies are all going for higher than list). We have about 4 EMG/NCV atlas-type publications hanging around our EMG lab, but everybody reaches for the Perotto. It's been out of publication for a while, which caused many graduating residents to covet it (and some to copy it), but they just did a reprint in June so hopefully this will increase supply. The single most useful feature is the cross-sectional anatomy diagrams. I can tell at a glance how deep I need to go, and what high-value targets, so to speak, that I might hit if I miss the mark (arteries, veins, that sort of thing). Love it!

Best Guide!

This is the best EMG book in the lab. It breaks each muscle down by its root, plexus, and nerve. It describes how to find the muscle and activate it. The pictures are invaluable! If I have to test a muscle I have not done in a while, I immediately go to this book. Highly recommended if you perform EMGs.

About the Author
Robert F. Kronick is a professor in the Department of Counseling, Deafness, and Human Services at the University of Tennessee. He is the author of Dropouts: Who Drops Out and Why, with Charles Hargis, Human Services and the Full Service School, and At Risk Youth Theory, Practice, and Reform. Dr. Kronick has been awarded the Alumni Outstanding Teaching award and was the first Department Head of the Department of Human Services at the University of Tennessee. He became interested in Full Service Schools because of his work in corrections. The remainder of his career is devoted to the prevention of problems of children and families.

The discussion of these cases is not intended to be comprehensive, but to serve as a useful stimulus for further in-depth discussion of the issues. The initial cases from each chapter are discussed in the conclusion. The goal is for the reader to develop a keen sensitivity to ethical questions and skill in the critical thinking process that leads to careful, reasoned decisions about what to do. Reflection on the issues and attention to the reasoning process can aid nurses, clients, families, and other caregivers as they confront the emotion-laden decisions of home health care ethics. About the Author
GERALD W. GARNER, a 25-year veteran of law enforcement, is a lieutenant with the Lakewood, Colorado Police Department. Specializing in topics including police supervision, police-press relations and officer survival, he has written five books and over 100 magazine articles. He instructs widely and has served as a guest lecturer for the FBI National Academy, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Western Institute for Police Administration and the National Park Service. He also has extensive experience instructing for a number of police academies and colleges.

Garner holds a Master's Degree in Administration of justice and is a P.O.S.T. certified law enforcement instructor in Colorado. His undergraduate degree is in journalism.

During his law enforcement career, the author has held various assignments including patrol officer, patrol sergeant, detective sergeant, crime prevention specialist, SWAT hostage negotiator, public information officer and watch commander. He currently supervises his department's personnel services function and is director of Lakewood's recruit training academy.

This book by Doctors Farkas and Munro will help not only orthoplastic surgeon, but also pediatricians, orthodontists, and psychologists in their diagnosis and decision for treatment or abstention.
This book is not bound within the confines of anthropomorphic measurements. The most important aspect of this book is that the authors never depart from guiding line of proportion. Harmony or disharmony does not lie within angles, distances, lines,surfaces or volumes. They arise from proportion.
A book such as this cannot exhaust a subject with variations as endless as the humanity in studies. The authors have wisely avoided the stumbling block of excessive iconography. They correctly chosen demonstrative drawings and diagrams to reinforce through patterns of analysis rather than dissect isolated cases presented in photographs.
This book will not be just another "reference book". for those who read and study and consider the material contained, they will find a compass map and rout marker, to assess whether or not the position is correct and the position true.

About the Author
Keith Storey (Ph.D., University of Oregon) is a Professor of Education and the Special Education Program Chair at Touro University in Vallejo, California. Keith is the recipient of the 1988 Alice H. Hayden Award from The Association for Persons with Severe Handicaps; the 1996 Hau-Cheng Wang Fellowship from Chapman University, presented for exceptional merit in scholarship; and the 2001 Robert Gaylord-Ross Memorial Scholar Award from the California Association for Persons with Severe Disabilities. A member of the Illinois State University College of Education Alumni Hall of Fame, he serves on the editorial boards of Research and Practice for Persons with Severe Disabilities, Education and Treatment of Children, Career Development for Exceptional Individuals, Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation, Journal of Positive Behavior Interventions, and Education and Training in Autism and Developmental Disabilities. It was well worth my time.

An Assessor's Viewpoint: Excellent Information

I have had the opportunity to do a lot of assessing, and have also been a candidate for promotion. I think this book is the best I've seen for helping a candidate get inside the process, really understand it and prepare for it. It would also be useful for assessors and those who are developing an assessment center without professional help. I'm going to use it as a general reference.

This is not a book to skim, because it is jam-packed with information, without the excess white space and big margins so many of these kind of books seem to have. I would suggest reading it one time for an overview, then slowly re-reading it from the very beginning. You will miss out on a lot of good material if you skip chapters or don't read them in order.

One of the things that stands out about this book is that the author uses many footnotes, quotations, and real-life examples, which always increases the credibility of a book for me. Not only did I find useful information, I found the titles of many other books I can use. It was obviously well researched, which I thought was impressive considering that you're lucky if you find even one or two validating footnotes in most of the other books on the subject. And the behind-the-scenes stories were so true, there is no doubt she has been there and done that.

This book is not only interesting to read...it would be worth reading even if you aren't taking a test...but I thought it was inspirational. Most books on promotional processes only talk about how to get promoted. This one talks about how to be your best after you are promoted, or even if you don't make it to the top of a list. I would like to read more books by this author.

If you only buy one book, make it this one.

I bought this book after looking for something to assist me in a police lieutenant's exam. I picked this one over the other books after reading the positive reviews.
This book was well written and easy to follow. The way it is laid out makes it easy to skip around later after it has been read. The author was careful to keep the text in chronological order leading up to the day of the assessment center. The author gives the reader several easy to remember tools to assist on the day of the assessment center. I feel fortunate to have purchased this book because I think it was the main factor in my own successful assessment center. I would not buy anything else and I have recommended it to several people so far.
Just a side note; after finishing the book, i e-mailed the author with a few follow up questions. She replied the following day with a personal e-mail and a lot of additional examples. I doubt she will be able to do this for everybody, but it shows her dedication to her product.

Excellent book for preparation for an assessment center for a Captain's position. Well written with useful insights and information. Much better than a previous book I purchased. Pretty much had it all except it would have been helpful to have an exercise to practice on. Otherwise it was worth every penny I spent on it.
