Classic Heinlein Stories

The Past Through Tomorrow (1967) is an omnibus collection of the relatively short SF stories in the Future History series. These stories were originally published between 1939 and 1962. Many were first published in Astounding Science Fiction, but others first saw print in a variety of other venues. This edition includes an introduction by Damon Knight.

Life-Line (1939) tells of the man who could predict the time of death of an individual; this was Heinlein's first sale. The Roads Must Roll (1940) is about an illegal work stoppage on the mechanical roads. Blowups Happen (1940) depicts the tensions among the workers in an atomic breeder plant. The Man Who Sold the Moon (1949) relates the story of D. D Harriman and his efforts to establish a base on the Moon. Delilah and the Space-Rigger (1949) recounts the tale of the men who constructed Space Station One and the woman who came among them.

Space Jockey (1947) describes the perils of piloting a passenger ship in space. Requiem (1939) reveals the story of how D.D. Harriman finally got to the Moon. The Long Watch (1948) is a tale of duty, honor and death. Gentlemen, Be Seated (1948) tells of three men in a tunnel on the Moon that starts leaking air. The Black Pits of Luna (1947) concerns a lost child on the Moon.

"It's Great to be Back!" (1946) is a tale of homecoming for two Luna City residents. "--We Also Walk Dogs" (1941) discloses how General Services performed an unusual task for the government. Searchlight (1962) concerns another lost child on the Moon. Ordeal in Space (1947) is about a man who is afraid of falling. The Green Hills of Earth (1947) depicts the last voyage of Rhysling, the blind poet of the spaceways.

Logic of Empire (1941) exposes the reasons for slave labor in the colonies. The Menace from Earth (1947) relates the story of Holly Jones of Luna City and the beautiful tourist. "If This Goes On--" (1940) describes one man's role in the Second American Revolution against Nehemiah Scudder, the Prophet Incarnate. Coventry (1940) tells the story of a rebellious young man who defies the Covenant. Misfit (1939) portrays a young man with an unusual talent.

Methuselah's Children (1941) concerns the troubles of a group with greatly extended lifespans. This tale introduces Lazarus Long, one of Heinlein's most popular characters. This version of the story is much longer that the original and has been further extended into a series of novels.

The book also includes a chart of Heinlein's Future History upon pages 622 and 623. The chart includes the stories Universe and Common Sense, which are not contained in this omnibus. However, this chart also omits several full-length novels in this series.

Although Heinlein wrote many other stories and novels, the stories in this omnibus are probably the reason for his initial popularity within the science fiction community. Stranger in a Strange Land led to his fame within the general population, but was not treated as a cult book by SF fans. We understood a lot more about this novel than did the general public and accepted it as just another of his major works.

Highly recommended for Heinlein fans and for anyone else who enjoys classic tales of high technology, highly competent people and human values.

Heinlein's time line of the future

John W. Campbell, editor of the sci-fi magazine "Analog" coined the term "future history" about the chain of characters and stories written by Robert A. Heinlein. It's a brilliant term, because Heinlein literally created a fictional history of an entire people, from Earth, to early space travel, to settling the moon, to moving out among the stars.
This book, astonishingly out of print, contains many of Heinlein's best short stories and novellas, filling in the gaps for his major novels such as "Time Enough for Love" and "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress."
Heinlein apparently kept a complicated character-and-time chart in his study. This book has a copy of the chart, plus the award-winning stories and short fiction.
Included here: "Methuselah's Children"--the beginning of the story of the Howard Families that is taken up in the sweeping novel "Time Enough for Love." You'll also find stories that explain the founding of Luna City, pioneering space travel, and the revolution against the theocracy begun by Nehemiah Scudder.
If you are a Heinlein fan, this is a great book to have--fills out the gaps in his complete works. If you aren't a Heinlein fan, start with "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" or "Starship Troopers" to find out how great Heinlein's science fiction is.

Fantastic Resource

Mr. Kelly has written a truely comprehensive book concerning the martial arts as they apply to Law Enforcement Officers as well as members of society as a whole. The other reviewer would have been less disappointed if he had simply read the title. This book is not promising to teach techniques, but it does give the reader alot of information about what kinds of training are available and how these Arts apply to the Law Enforcement Officer and the various situations he may face. This book will make you think (as suggested by the title).

Not as good as I hoped

This book is just O.K. It needs pictures to go along with the defense moves he talks about. I would have to take all kinds of different martial arts to figure out what he's talking about. He briefly mentions the names of the moves with no pictures or demonstrations.

Class Recommended Reading

I bought this for class even though the book was not required. I have two degrees in criminal justice already and one in psychology (a forensic psychology based dual degree program) so I have taken many classes that touch on the topics in the book. Research over the years and school has put me into contact with much of the content in the book. I wouldn't highly recommed the book unless you are required to buy it of course. However, the book is a light read so a tremendous amount of time will not be invested if you do decide that more is better when it comes to school.

"Crime of the Century" is outstanding example of old-time reporting

As a deadline crime reporter for 30 years, I know solid reporting. Hal Higdon's story of the Leopold and Loeb saga represents solid reporting, powerful writing and an objective view lacking in many contemporary stories. His writing offers a close-up view of high society life in the early part of the 20th century, and the workings of sick, brilliant minds. This is a classic. Reviewer Steven Hepker.

Covers all bases- wonderful!

So, Hal Higdon apparently used to be a journalist for Runner's World, which would explain why the book is written kind of like a realllllllly long magazine article... but that's okay with me. I mean, there are a LOT of facts in this book, most of the time facts that don't appear to be important. Sometimes it seems a little random, but it also adds to the realness of the case. A TON of research obviously went into the writing of this book. If you're already interested in the Leopold and Loeb case, this book is perfect! It's incredibly detailed, and I felt it was pretty suspenseful. It's also pretty long- I mean, it covers EVERYTHING. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and was inspired to go rent every movie adaptation there is of the case. Excellent!

The not-so-perfect crime

I had never heard of this case before March, when I saw an American Experience PBS documentary entitled "The Perfect Crime." I started digging, and have become absolutely fascinated by the story. Two wealthy, good-looking, brilliant college students enter into a twisted pact of sex and crime, culminating in a brutal, senseless murder-- all for the thrill of proving that they were "supermen" who could get away with it. A must-read for anyone interested in true crime.

Good, but should be large print

I work as an activity director at a nursing home and I purchased this sing-along book to use with our residents. It has a very nice selection of songs and is very nice quality. My one complaint is that,for a sing-along book that says it is specifically designed for senior citizens, it forgot to use large print. I wish I could copy the sheets so the residents could read and follow-along. Also, the pianist we have is elderly and doesn't have perfect eyesight. Large print would make it much easier for her to read the notes. I am very surprised and disappointed by this. It would be the perfect sing-along book if it were large print. I hope they make a revised edition in large print.

Too Small. No Music.

This book is way too small! I'm 29 and I can't even read it. It says its designed for seniors and the print is size 11? What were they thinking?
I'm also disappointed because I thought it was going to come with a CD. I guess that's my mistake. All the other sing alongs I've ordered have included music, but this was a disappointment in that it did not. Needless to say, we will not be using this Sing Along.

Haven't had a chance to use it yet, but it looks like it will work for my group. The songs are in alphabetical order, which surprised me a little. I like them when they are in sections by topic, such as "folk songs" but I can get used to this.

In 1978 it would be 5 stars for sure!

This book is an awesome text for anyone who conducts crime scene investigation. The reason for the 3 star rating is the sad truth that this book is simply out-dated. Originally written in 1978 it was ahead of its time. Unfortunately it has not kept up with the advances in technology. The book is full of references to film and and cameras that are no longer available as well as suppliers that no longer exist. The book is written from a practical use viewpoint that is rare under any circumstances. I read this book as a requirement for the International Association for Identification Crime Scene Analyst certification exam and enjoyed it very much. Anyone who investigates crime scenes or conducts processing or comparisons will find this book of value. The book is comprehensive in that it discusses comparison, lifting prints, taking inked prints, fingerprint kits and equipment, chemical processes and case studies. The IAI has phased this book from its required list due in part, most likely to the fact that there is simply too much information that is out of date. Some things are still right on though. Fingerprints are unique and persistent! If you are interested in the science of fingerprints this one should be in your library.

An oldy but a goody

This book is a classic and I found it to be very informative. A significant portion of the data is obsolete and therefore should be taken in that perspective. If you work in this field you will find this book of worth. It also offers a perspective into the pioneering attitude of CSIs and latent print examiners from 'back in the day'. If you have read the FBI science of fingerprints and survived, you will love this textbook. Untill 2005 this was required reading for the IAIs Crime Scene Analyst certification exam. I assume they pulled it in favor of more up to date material.

Very informative, excellent resource

I read this book in high school when I chose to write my term paper on Peoples Temple. I found it again while I was moving and read it again with a much more appreciative attitude. I finished reading it today. This is THE book to read if your simply looking to learn all about the Peoples Temple, Jim Jones, and the tragedy at Jonestown. I have read several other books on the subject, but they lacked the amount of insider knowledge and first-hand accounts of the events that took place. This book is entirely based on FACT, without speculation. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 simply because I did not particularly like the way the book ends. Over all, I would recommend this book to anyone and everyone. It is the most informative source for Peoples Temple facts that I myself have come across. It is the perfect source for research about the Temple, Jim Jones, Jonestown, or even just cults in general. It gives a great perspective from various Temple defectors who came forward and spoke of what life with the Temple was like. George Klineman deserves a lot of recognition for his work on this book.

An Excellent Reference in Regards to the People's Temple!

I felt this book was exactly on target in regards to studying about how the event of November 18, 1978 came to be and how people tried so hard to prevent such a catastrophe. I felt this book was well-detailed, researched, and easily to read. Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down for long. It's a page turner. For anybody interested in studying about the People's Temple, Jim Jones, and Jonestown, this book is a must have on the reading list.
