Unfit. Thanks for Asking.

This book is appauling. I am litterally embarrassed that I belong to the same profession as the person who wrote it. Normally, I summarise a book and have a small section of criticism. In this book there was too little information to make it worthwhile to summarise. Below are a list of chapter headings and a list of some of the specific problems in each chapter. The biggest problem with the book was that it simply did not provide information to help with with writing a fitness for duty report. I spent a day reading this book and I want my day back.

I have not read other books on Amazon about fitness for duty evaluations of police officer, such as A Handbook for Psychological Fitness-For-Duty Evaluations in Law Enforcement. If you want to start to do examinations of police officers I can recommend Writing and Defending Your IME Report: The Comprehensive Guide and A Physician's Guide To Return To Work. These latter two books are so much better than Decker, that to make any comparison between them and Decker is grating to me.

1. Introduction to Fitness-for-Duty Evaluations in Law Enforcement Personnel
=========================================================
The cover of the book is unprofessional. The conclusion to the first chapter contains information that was not in the body of the chapter.

2. Stress in Law Enforcement Personnel: Sources and Manifestations
=================================================
Terms are introduced in this chapter but are not defined. They include compassion fatigue and duty death. The author takes not account of the fact that what someone thinks stresses them and what actually does stress them are not necessarily the same thing (Ref: Telling more than we can know. De Climente and Wilson, 1976). The author also puts random sentences with bold italics for no good reason. There is a typo on page 32, where the same sentence is repeated.

This chapter lacks the sophistication that authors such as Peter Cotton bring to the subject. Cotton, for example, considers morale and stress as two separate issues. The author also ignores the issue of anger at mistreatment exacerbating injury, and focuses only on causes of injury. This is in spite of attempting to address organizational stressors in this chapter.

The author states that 48% of retirements were related to back injury and 4% to psychological injury and notes (in bold italics) that "only 4 percent of disability retirement were related to psychological conditions." This ignores the relationship between back pain and psychological injury. I know this is a difficult topic, but that's not excuse for being simple minded when you write and entire book.

Officers who reported higher cynicism used more force: but cynicism is not defined.

The author appears to endorse compulsory debriefing after traumatic incidents (with supervisors and/or mental health professionals). In general trauma, compulsory debriefing of traumatised civilians began to be discredited in the early 1990s and has become more discredited since then. The author fails to address this contradiction in her book. She might be right, but how do I know she has even covered the basics of compulsory debriefing. (I know that this in not about writing reports, but most of the book is not about writing reports.).

The author quotes "planful problem-solving" but does not bother saying what is meant by that, as usual.

3. Common Causes of "Unfit" Officers
=============================
Why is `Unfit' in quotation marks? The author does not know how to punctuate, as I will further demonstrate later. There is a typo on the table on page 47 where the two right-hand columns are mislabeled. On page 51, the author states (yep, in bold italics) "The reader is cautioned that the hypothesis presented above is novel and is untested." Well, leave it out of your book then, it is clear that you are not an authority, as I will demonstrate later.

Page 53 contains an egregious error. "Obsessive-compulsive traits are very frequently seen in law enforcement applicants (Decker, unpublished), but the full-blown disorder would be crippling for a police officer. For example, imagine a police officer who could not drive his/her patrol area without counting signs on the road!" The author repeats the same error later in the book. The fact is that OCD and OCPD are two different disorders. For example, someone could have severe OCPD where they are obsessed with rules and details and someone else could have mild OCD where they spend 10 minutes leaving the house each morning. One authority (? which) says that the comorbidities between the two disorders is only 5%, but I recon its probably higher.

On the same page, she makes a lot of diagnosis of PD in those with an axis I disorder and takes not account that this is a fraught thing to do.

Page 56 gives a case history that is repeated later in the book.

Page 58 typo: top paragraph ends without a full stop

Page 58 again: author discusses treatment of panic disorder without discussing talking treatment. This kind of stuff is the reason psychologists can think psychiatrists are dumb. The author also describes antidepressants using trade names.

Page 62: The author states that bipolar affective disorder occurs in 15% of the population. She says that twice in the book. The true incidence for all bipolar spectrum disorders is about 5% (ref: Sadock and Sadock, 8th).

4. Psychological Tests for Fitness in Law Enforcement Personnel
==============================================
Page 68: "It is extremely important for ... evaluations to understand the specific job tasks..." No, evaluations might take something into account but they do not understand anything.

Page 69: "...peace [police] officer."

Page 73: The author refers to the K scale of the MMPE-2 but does not say what it is. She does this more with this chapter.

Page 77: She puts `transparent' in double quotes; why?

This chapter refers to detection of malingering but does not mention trauma scales with reliability scales built in. Some include the SIRS, the TSI and the M-FAST.

Page 80: Exclamation marks galore!

Page 82: In bold: "There is no single test that provides a quick answer." Yeah, but there are authors who will recommend test(s) for different purposes. No synthesis of tests here and no mention of some important tests.

5. Medication Issues in Fitness for Duty Evaluations
======================================
Page 86: Confuses cause and effect of sleep disturbance was disregarded. On the same page, back pain is treated as a purely physical issue and referred to as "back strain."

Page 92 and 95: Egregious error: The author stated that there are no medications specifically for PTSD and that SSRIs are used to treatment of associated depression. But it implies that there are not medications that indicated in PTSD. The reference for this was not from an authoritative source but from a trial of EMDR. It is as if Decker took a psychoolgy study's swipe at medication for PTSD and used it for her literature review. PTSD is an anxiety disorder, so SSRIs work well. The author makes not mention of antipsychotic for nightmares, either.

See, dear reader, this is why you should not buy this book. The above is about a close as the author goes to sticking out her neck and making a specific recommendation. She even uses passive language to distance herself from her own, weak recommendations.

Page 103: Embarrassing error: Author writes the generic names of drugs with capital letters. Ugh. There is a typo on the same page with a comma without a space after it.

Page 110: The author says (twice in the book) that sedating antidepressants should be used for agitated, depressed people and stimulating antidepressants should be used for slowed down patients. This is a common practice, but, I understand, contradicted by the outcome of studies of it.

Page 113: Likewise the author says that BPAD II should be treated with low doses of a mood stabiliser and an antidepressant. This is not referenced. Some psychiatrists treat BPAD II like BPAD I and some like major depression. I am not saying she is wrong, but she has no reference. Maybe subtherapeutic doses of stabilizers do no good at all?

Page 114: "A complete discussion of the pros and cons of retaining law enforcement personnel who have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder is beyond the scope of this book and is controversial." This is why you should not buy the book. It talks a lot about generalities but dodges the specific questions.

Page 117: One of the references is Decker K.P. (2006) Medications a[e]ffecting fitness for duty in law enforcement professionals. FBI Bulletin, submitted. I could not find the reference and I wonder if it was accepted for publication. None of the articles in this journal seemed detailed.

A great book, but it's more of an accessory than a necessity.

First, keep in mind that this work was published in 1981. Secondly, keep in mind that this is not about current scandals or conspiracies in the Church. If you are expecting a lot of discussion from Malachi Martin on the latest intrigue and outrage at Vatican II, this is not that book.

Here is what the book is.

Martin begins the book with a brief narration of the state of the Church pre-312. Then, he points out that Pope Silvester's deal with Emperor Constantine was the beginning of the Roman Catholic Church's troubles. By allowing the Church to become intertwined with the affairs of the Empire, the Church became chained to this temporal world's affairs and drawbacks, and incidentally, the papacy has become corrupted by the whole process.

Then, from that point, Martin points out various examples of how the Church has become corrupted throughout history. Several amazing episodes that intrigued me can be found on page 109 (the story of the perverted 12-year old Pope, Theophylact), pages 124-125 (the account of cardinal Cesare Borgia, who wore a mask to hide a deformity, employed a personal assassin, was bisexual, and assassinated his own brother), and page 182 (the lack of attention to Martin Luther, due to overconcern with the imperial power of the Church's papal states). I was surprised to see that Martin didn't cover the Crusades much, but that's a different topic altogether, I guess.

Toward the end of the book, in the final section titled Decline and Fall, Martin brings attention to the Church's situation in the last century. It is at this point that you become grateful to Martin for having shown you the previous centuries of Church history. You can view the Church's modern plight in the context of its imperfect history.

Now, in this last section, Malachi Martin does not bring on condemning remarks about Pope John Paul II, and he is hesitant to criticize Pope John XXIII for the post-modern revisions of Vatican II. Rather, Martin sums up the entire downward movement of the Church, likening it to a snowball rolling down a mountain, rolling out of control after a certain point in history. (Martin really did a great job illustrating Napoleon's role in the West's secularization, by the way.)

Ultimately, this is a great book. It is great because it is well written, well thought out, and tied together nicely. In addition, any time a person can get an opportunity to hear Malachi Martin's take on Church history, they should take it! Martin has a unique perspective on these matters, and he is worth your attention.

As you can probably tell by the Amazon.com prices for used copies, it is rather expensive. I'm guessing that this is a bit of a rare book. Somehow, I managed to pre-order my copy, and I got it for $12. The copy I got was a novel-sized paperback that was about 260 pages. The price on the spine of my book was $3.95! This little thing is surely not worth $70! Yet, buy it if you must--though I'd encourage you to search the libraries first.

If you absolutely must have a book of Malachi Martins, I'd suggest Hostage to the Devil. Decline and the Fall of the Roman Church is more of an accessory than anything. It is not as much as a necessity as his other books.

_The Decline and Fall of the Roman Church_ by the late traditionalist Roman Catholic priest Father Malachi Martin is a fascinating account of the history of the church progressing from the earliest beginnings to Constantine's eventual relationship with the church during the reign of Pope Silvester I up until the post Vatican II popes and Pope John Paul II. The book shows the transformations that took place in the papacy as the relationship between temporal power and spiritual authority was worked out throughout the years. Also, the book shows how the early popes were chosen, including how many were appointed by kings or their predecessors (often involving intrigue and poisonings), up until the invention of the conclave. While the Roman Popes certainly were not impeccable, their spiritual authority in matters of faith and morals is guarranteed by the words of Christ himself. Much of this book is spent reviewing the many scandals and intrigues of the popes who often acted in a manner more befitting a petty despot than the spiritual authority of the world's strongest religion. Father Malachi Martin's thesis is that the church exists in a state of steady decline, brought about by a defection from its true principles, and an abandonment of spiritual authority for temporal power. Indeed, the sins of man are many, due to his fallen nature, and throughout the centuries they have come to corrode the very structures upon which Christ built his church. This book, written in 1981 is somewhat dated but its prophecy for the coming decades remains valid. The complications which have arisen since the Second Vatican Counsel, the brazen disobedience of Christ's supposed faithful to the authority of the pope and his predecessors, the collusion of the hierarchy with liberalism, modernism, and Marxist revolution, and the moral decline of the modern age are issues which currently confront the church more than ever. Perhaps the modern age can be made sense of in terms of prophecy by rereading those prophecies of the saints which reveal a hidden meaning behind historical events. I regret only that the author did not provide adequate footnotes to his book so that his facts could be checked against standard sources. He appears to take some liberty with things that may be unjustifiable. Nevertheless, for its important remarks concerning the coming and continuing crises within the church (recently brought to light in the many scandals among the priesthood and the hierarchy) this book remains of fundamental interest to all who want to understand the history and progression of the Roman Catholic Church and its papacy.

As a Protestant it is easy for me to list the flaws of the Catholic church. When a Roman Catholic priest writes a book that casts a critical eye at the church, what he writes is far more credible. Such is "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Church," by the late Jesuit Malachi Martin.

The thesis of this book is straightforward. Beginning with a description of the Faustian bargain between Emperor Constantine and Pope Sylvester, Martin goes on to describe the steps by which the church not only gained temporal power but made progressively stronger claims regarding its authority over all earthly powers, including the civil rulers, in its attempt to gain full control of what it regarded as Christendom. We read, for example, of the crowning of Charlemagne by Leo III on Christmas Day 800, an event that marked the birth of what became the Holy Roman Empire. Although one might see this as a moment of triumph for the civil ruler, it was really a victory for the papacy. By giving the pope the authority to install the civil ruler in his position, it symbolized the authority of the pope over the ruler.

Thus the power of the papacy continued to grow through the time of Gregory V and his humiliation of Henry IV at Canossa, through the reign of Innocent III, when, by all accounts the power of the pope was at its zenith, until the time of Boniface VIII, when the pretentious claims of "Unam Sanctum" for the power of the sword of the church over the temporal sword could no longer be backed up and Boniface suffered his own humiliation.

Thankfully, the history of the papacy does not end there. As Martin fully acknowledges, the papacy's understanding of its power has changed under the guidance of recent popes. In particular, he notes how Paul VI and his successors have replaced the idea of the church as a kingdom with that of an institution that has been uniquely called as a servant of "the people of God."

Could have use more polishing

Only devoted fans of Alfred Bester's science fiction and fantasy will be enthralled with this book, a collection of largely forgettable stories and other odds and ends. The book wisely opens with a bang - the powerfully moving "Adam and No Eve" which describes the fate of the driven scientific visionary who becomes the last man on Earth. In an unusual twist, the intrepid explorer's determination to reach for the stars instigates an ecological catastrophe that renders the whole planet uninhabitable. Bester gets maximum mileage from his skill at writing prose that is heavy with violence and pain in this paean to a lost world. This kind of story is not for everyone, of course, but it's easily the best piece in this collection. Of the remaining stories, the more memorable are those that feature aberrant personalities, like the not-quite lovable kooks in "They Don't Make Life Like They Used To" and the frightening but fascinating lunatic who calls himself "The Pi Man". In a lighter vein, "Something Up There Likes Me" shows us the proud parents of an intelligent satellite and how their loving "son" affects their lives, as well as those of everyone on the planet. Included in the collection are three stories about time travel: the psychologically-based "Time Is the Traitor" fizzles despite some strong characterizations, "Hobson's Choice" suggests that one can never be happy outside one's own milieu, and "Of Time and Third Avenue" is a thoroughly forgettable yarn about an almanac from the future. The theme behind each of these stories is that time travel is a dead end to be avoided. Bester seems to think that better results can be obtained by mental control over external events, as with the genius in "Star Light, Star Bright", although he points out the dangers of such powers in "Oddy and Id". His interview with sci-fi legend Isaac Asimov is far too short to be memorable, and the autobiographical essay "My Affair with Science Fiction" may be interesting to Bester's fans, but isn't especially notable in itself. Few of these stories are scientific enough to show their age (although most of them are over 40 years old), but the ideas espoused in this collection seem to somehow fall a little short. Bester is surely a very talented writer, but too many of these stories have a half-finished quality that begs for another re-write, as though most of the story were written before he'd worked out the ending, and then once finished, he didn't have time to go back and fit the first half to the second. In any case, only "Adam and No Eve" really merits a recommendation. The rest of this book can be skipped without any major loss.

About the Author
Susan T. Dennison is an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Work at UNCG where she has been on faculty for 20 years. She has an active teaching and research program at UNCG with external funding at both the state and foundation levels. Susan s expertise, teaching, and research have focused on group work for the past 30 years resulting in nine books along with numerous articles. She ran a national group consulting company and presented at both national and international conferences on group work. Susan was an ongoing consultant and trainer for the UNCG Faculty Mentoring Program.
