For Anatomic Pathology Laboratories this book is the gold standard for communicating staging information. I would strongly urge Oncologists and Doctors treating oncology patients to reference this book for staging information, and to judge completeness of Pathology reports.
It should be noted that the information is direct and to the point, without much supporting text. This should be considered as an up to date reference on the current thinking in terms of what is important in determining stage and prognosis. It is not an educational text that carefully or clearly defines the terms used by Doctors and Oncologists.

excellent introductory text; weak on treatments

Written for biomedical students, this book is an excellent, well written textbook, covering general topics in oncology (epidemiology, pathology, surgery, radiation) and specific types of cancer. Some parts are too clinical for the general public, but if you are interested in the subject, this book is clear and useful. I highly recommend it to graduate students and public libraries.

Clients' narratives are included in each chapter to illustrate particular advanced narrative skills and major discussion points. The cultural context of such narratives may involve a combination of such factors as clients' race and ethnicity, language, religion and spirituality, gender, age, sexual orientation, disabling conditions, social class, and location. Tables and figures included in each chapter illustrate specifically how particular narrative strategies can be used with clients and also clarify how to use those approaches in combination with other practice frameworks, including family systems, task-centered, crisis, solution-focused, group mutual aid, cognitive behavioral, and brief theoretical approaches. In addition, to the individual, family, community, organizational, and cultural narratives, the book also includes other story forms such as poetry, metaphors, proverbs, parables, letters, personal journals, art, and music.

In order to achieve successful regular classroom participation for children with disabilities with supplementary aids and services, consultant teacher services are essential. This book is intended for special education teachers and other professionals providing special education services with information, guidelines and suggestions relating to the role and responsibilities of the special education consultant teacher. Every state must provide a continuum of alternative placements (e.g. regular classroom, resource room, self-contained setting), but the focus of this guide is participation in the regular classroom and/or regular curriculum 'to enable children with disabilities to be educated with nondisabled children to the maximum extent appropriate.' The many suggestions provided should prove useful concerning what the special education consultant teacher can and should do to enable children with disabilities to be educated with nondisabled children. The book is comprised of seven parts as follows: (1) basic consultant teacher responsibilities and regulatory concerns; (2) planning, individualized planning and IEP consultant teacher services; (3) outlining the various consultant teacher indirect services; (4) describing the direct consultant teacher services; (5) the importance of the regular classroom and the regular classroom teacher for the consultant teacher; (6) identifying the many Least Restrictive Environment, inclusion and mainstreaming issues important to the consultant teacher; and (7) addressing the varied supervisory and job responsibilities of the consultant teacher.

a little redundant, not a lot of new info

This book covers (and covers and covers) all the "surface" info regarding special education. While it does describe the role of the special education teacher in the consultant model, I was hoping for more of a resource on specifics such as "how to create a lesson plan book" and helpful ideas for collaborating with general education teachers". This is a must for my bookshelf, but I wish it wasn't so repetitive and had more actual useful resources.

This could have been worse

This book is not well written; it needs a lot of editing. When it says "common sense police supervision," it means it. If your friends think you are a moron and have no common sense, this book is a must read. However, if you have any sense of the reality that surrounds you, don't bother.

My husband bought this book along with a few others to study for the Philadelphia Sergeant's Exam. This book was easy to read and had some really good points in it. Much better then most of the "required texts"

Anyone who has studied for the police supervision exams is forced to read the "required texts" Iannone, Swanson or Miller, Much of the information tends to be dated even though they keep issuing new editions. I found that Common Sense Police Supervision provided a good amount of new information that I used when I first became a supervisor.

This book is misnamed. It shows you not only how to teach patients with low literacy skills--but all patients!
Teaching Patients With Low Literacy Skills shows you how to apply current research findings to actively involve your learner and enhance understanding and retention. It shows you how to prepare written and audiovisual materials so they most effectively teach.
Best of all, the Suitability Assessment of Materials form helps you evaluate teaching materials, quantitatively, so you invest your limited patient ed dollars wisely in the best teaching tools.
It's the classic in the field. This is the book everyone else quotes. Including me.

THE reference manual for anyone working with adult learners.

Thank you for this most useful manual in helping us understand the barriers to learning and how to overcome them. I work in a Family Practice Residency in which many of our patients have low literacy skills. We use this text to evaluate our spoken words and written texts offered to our patients. I was asked to summarize one of the chapters to present at a meeting, and found this text can't be summarized...it is already as concise as it can be made, with every word necessary.
We ordered several teaching tools shown in the later chapters and have found them to be helpful as well.
We checked out the text from our Health Science Library, liked it so well we got one of our own for the office, and I just bought one for myself to keep at home

This book is truely a classic in the field of patient education. Everyone who teaches patients/clients should read this book as much of what is written for patients -- can't be read by them. The number of illiterate and poor readers in this country is unbelievable yet this is sledom taken into consideration by health professionals. I had the pleasure to attend an all day seminar given by Cecilia and Leonard Doak years ago and have used their lessons since.
