I recently read a review on Amazon by a person named “anonymous” regarding my book “Dying for the Job”. I generally do not respond to persons who make statements about other author’s works under the mask of anonymity, but I think this particular one deserves comment.
First, these comments are a disservice to the twenty authors who wrote chapters in this book. They are all accomplished scientists- epidemiologists, psychologists, biostatisticians, sociologists, and physicians. I might ask anonymous what his/her credentials are.
Anonymous first statement “the real question is, what is the relative risk of police work compared to demographically matched non-police peers in the general population, and to other occupations?” can be answered by just one among many others of our research groups 89 peer reviewed publications in police stress and health. In summary, we determined that police officers, even at young ages, were already exhibiting increased levels of subclinical cardiovascular disease, compared with the similarly aged civilian population sample from the same geographical region (Joseph, Violanti, et al, 2010, JOEM ,52,10, 2010). All of the other studies we have done demonstrate positive associations between stress, cardiovascular, and metabolic diseases.
It also appears that anonymous has a problem with our suicide chapter. It is true that there is much controversy about police suicide, and in all of my previous writings on this topic, I point out the differences of opinion on this topic. I did not do so in this chapter because I felt it repetitive. I still firmly believe that despite the controversy, law enforcement personnel are at increased risk for suicide. In looking at the latest Centers for Disease Control (CDC) data, I found that police officers had a 69% greater risk for suicide than did the United States working population. This figure was adjusted age, gender, and ethnicity and involved over 1,400,000 persons. To me, this is good evidence. Additionally, the study by O’Hara, et al (2013) fortifies these results.
Regarding cancer, the chapter by Wirth, et al, who are well versed in cancer research, reviews the majority of published literature on cancer among police. Additionally we have in the past conducted three mortality studies on police. Every one of them showed an increase for certain cancer sites. The main conclusion of these studies- police have an increased risk for cancer.
As for life expectancy of police officers, apparently anonymous has not read our latest study which compared police life expectancy to that of the U.S. population (Violanti, et al 2013). On average, the life expectancy of police officers in our sample was significantly lower than the U.S. population (mean difference in life expectancy =21.9 years; 95% CI: 14.5-29.3; p
