a very memorable unique plot

I first read Michael's Wife in high school. It was in my hometown's local library (and I hope it is still there because I have been unable to locate a copy to purchase). It is a book that makes an impression that has lasted because the two main characters seem almost real and Michael is a real woman's man. It is my favorite book about a character (Michael's wife) who has amnesia. It is a thriller to the last page, because you do not find out the whole story until the ending pages of the book. A must read! Good luck on finding a copy! Someone should print this book again. I think it could be a bestseller!

Fantastic Suspense Romance

There are a few books that I can pick up repeatedly, reread, and want to start over again from the beginning. This is one of them. It's my sick day book. A book that I can lay in bed with, rest for a while, wake up, pick it up again, and anxiously look forward to a satisfying resolution. The book is less than 200 pages long, yet every page connects a plot thread that logically gets picked up later. Like some of the great suspense stories, our heroine is someone who remains a mystery until the very end. This is a classic mystery and the suspense is in the characters. I compare the heroine, and the way the author never reveals her entire story to some of the great characters in romantic fiction (Rochester and the woman hidden in the upper levels of Thornfield Hall in Jane Eyre, or Rebecca in Daphne DuMaurier's classic mystery, or even Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice). This may not be included as a classic novel, but it should be identified as a classic in the romantic suspense genre.
I originally read this book at least 30 or 40 years ago as a copy in the library. When I had read all of the Marlys Millhiser books at my local library including my other favorite: The Mirror, I realized that Michael's Wife was not available in my library system, and I got a used paperback copy from Amazon. Image this; my used copy is a Fawcett paperback with the price marked at $ .95!

Winning combination: amnesiac wife, angry husband

I've read and re-read this book over the past 40 years and it never fails to elicit the romance and suspense it promises. Written in 1972, it is a highly atmospheric novel that at first sounds like a Gothic, yet it is set in the Arizona desert during the Vietnam era. Laurel comes stumbling out of the desert, not knowing who she is, where she came from, or anything else. It seems that she has been missing for two years, since the birth of her child. Her furious husband, a devout Catholic, takes her in, dumps the care of their son on her, and proceeds to ignore her as much as possible. He doesn't believe in her amnesia. Everyone else in the house seems likewise uninterested in her claim that her past is a blank. Eventually, Michael takes her to an uncomfortable tiny house on base (he's a Major in the Air Force), where she has to deal with his anger, her own confusion, her needy son...and some ominous flashbacks, dreams, and more. Is someone really after her? Is it her fragmented mind? What is going on? No one wants to help and Laurel is beyond fragile. A shattering climax completes this excellent read. I went on to read and love half a dozen of Millhiser's books, but this one (her first) sets the standard of excellence.
