What Everyone Interested in Art Therapy Should Have

This new history of art therapy in the US by Maxine Borowsky Junge, is the perfect follow-up to her original 1994 text (with Paige P. Asawa) titled, "A History of Art Therapy in the United States." If you have the first text, you will certainly want to get this new one with all its updated and expanded material. If you have never obtained the initial text, you will still want to get this latest book. You will find that it gives you everything you need or want to know about the continuing development of the unique profession of art therapy. In the interests of full-disclosure, I must mention that I am one of a very few who have contributed chapters to this book. However, this hardly diminishes the fact that this new text is a testament to Dr. Junge's exceptional scholarship, her diligence and respect for history, and her long and highly esteemed experience in the field of art therapy. It has important facts and insights to offer the seasoned professional and those just starting out in the profession, the art therapy educator and her or his students, and anyone who is interested in the field for whatever reason. And in addition to all that, it is a decided pleasure to read!
I'm sure you have gotten my message by now, but just in case you haven't, I'll end by saying I give this book my very highest recommendation!

The book is full of great information but HORRIBLY written

The book is full of great information but HORRIBLY written. I'm seriously editing as I go -- I have half a mind to send it back to the publisher in case they do another edition. It's filled with horrific comma usage, fragments, run-ons, and just exceptionally bad grammar all around. If you can get past all that, the information within the text is wonderful. But be ready to cringe as you read.

I was actually really disappointed when I received the book

This book was a requirement for a class and since there were no used copies for a reasonable price anywhere online or in stores, I begrudgingly purchased a new copy for $60. I was actually really disappointed when I received the book. The words were in large, elementary print and the pages were thick. I'm always careful with my books and keep them in the best possible condition. However, after only one week of light use the first few pages started to separate from the binding and fall out. I know it's because the pages are so thick, which to me is a poor design for a textbook, but the quality of book wasn't the only thing that left me feeling less than content. I didn't think the author did a very good job with presenting unbiased research. Rather, she often includes her opinions, whether intentionally or not, and I was left wanting after some less than lacking descriptions and definitions. The only reason I'm grading this book so low is because it's presented and priced as a scholarly textbook for students but the overall design is not. Needless to say, I would never have paid $60 for this book if it weren't a requirement. I don't understand what justifies this book being $60 (and this is the cheapest price anywhere) other than it being a way to get college students to spend the money that they don't have.
