Helpful for Couples Who Want to Improve their Communication

For years I have observed the characteristics of successful, long-term relationships. The one trait that seems to cut across all of these was the ability to tell a partner your feelings and desires, whether trivial or radical, in a clear and nonthreatening way.
Despite the fact that I've been told professionally that I am an excellent communicator, this book helped me realize that in intimate relationships I still play the "crazymaking" game of confusing coded and conflicting messages.
The book's examples showed how confusing coded and double messages exist in most relationships, why they are there, and what to do about them. It's especially relevant for couples in which one partner is passive-aggressive, though useful for nearly any couple who wants to improve their effectiveness at talking to one another.
The only reason I didn't give this book 5 *s is because there are several places where the authors wander off into theoretical space that won't mean a lot to anyone without a psychology degree. If you skip over those parts to the next example, you'll find this book fast and easy reading.

How to untangle the communication mess you're in.

This is the clearest description of how people (especially couples) get into the tangled web of resentments and withholds so common in a marriage and how to get out of the tangle. It is profusely sprinkled with examples of dialog, which not only makes the book easier to read, but makes the principles crystal clear.
The first part of the book clarifies exactly what the problem is. The second part of the book spells out what you can do about it. I'm the author of the book, Self-Help Stuff That Works, and much of what I've learned that really matters about communication can be traced back to this book. It is a shame it is out of print, but if you can find a copy, buy it!

People have a tendency to hide their true wants and feelings in order to be nice and get along better with others. When this is done in a close relationship, it can cause an extremely frustrating pattern that drives you both crazy.
This book clearly illustrates how this communication pattern works, what it is, and what you can do about it. The book is full of examples. When you read them, you'll instantly recognize the situations, because we are all the victims of crazymaking throughout our lives. But when you learn what motivates the crazymaking tactics, you're in a much better position to find your way to sanity.

good book

It's quite clear most of the time. It has basic physics in it so you'd never need to refer to another textbook for simple things that you've forgotten. I wish it was a little more updated though. It's limited in it's coverage of things like neutron therapy. But this book is so good, you could use it as a self study guide, almost.

Practial text to have

Physics of Radiology isn't as complete a text as Martin's, it seems more like a handbook than a physics text, but it is definitely useful and is full of examples that I can't find in other books. It's a little difficult to read straight through because of the visual format (it looks like it was written on a typewriter), but the examples are great references. I would have liked it if the authors used units more often, so that I could more easily adapt the examples but in all, it was a good investment.

Poorly written essay of student sold by author

Should be titled- Author Ethics: Crisis in Education. I was very disappointed in the quality of the content and definitely irritated about spending $25 for this dribble. The book was nothing more than a poorly written student's essay, re-hashing outdated information, sold as a new edition. It contained numerous errors (misspellings and incorrect words) and even included one of my pet peeves the word "irregardless", which even spell check knows is not a word. Had this not been required reading for a test I would have considered it a total waste of money! Actually, I think my IQ was lowered by read this.

Gypsy Cop information inaccurate!!

Your sadly misinformed Mr. Barker or do not hold all of the facts about which you are writing. In your section on "Gypsy Cops" you referenced a Montgomery County Sheriff who also worked for Dickson County in Tennessee. If you had ALL the facts this police officer was NEVER convicted of ANY crime thus that would explain why he was able to be hired by another agency. And the reason he was let go from Dickson County was because "someone" from Montgomery County found out he was working in Dickson and made a huge to do about it. NONE of the supposed incidents were ever proven to be fact and they were harassing the officer because they had it in for him! I believe it would be your duty before you spew misinformation and draw conclusions that you would know all the facts before printing them in your book. You are trying to make a case that is just not accurate and VERY misleading! You should take the time to interview the officer that you are accusing as well!!! What is sad and should also be discussed is how an officer can give 18 years of his life, be injured several times in the line of duty and be an outstanding officer with numerous awards and politics get in the way. For a department to not stand by an officer until all facts are known is reprehensible!! I think an appropriate book would be on the corruption and political games that are played with the upper positions within a law enforcement agency and what happens if an officer doesn't agree with them!!! If you did some real investigation you might find all the corruption that exists in these agencies from the upper up!!! How officers are told to not write tickets to certain citizens because they are donors to their campaigns or how a Montgomery County Sheriff can be elected and not have the legal right to even hold the position. That's a real story Mr. Barker!! And no why would an officer have to lose his certification if he has not been convicted legally of ANY crime!!!! Check the officers police record before you say he shouldn't be allowed to keep his certification!!

How little we knew

I grew up in Irvington and went to school with the daughter of one of the top men of this family. We had no idea what her family's secret life was until it hit the newspapers in the 70's. We were all shocked. We were in this person's home and in the home of her cousin in Vailsburg and spent countless hours together sleeping over each other's houses. I didn't read this book until I was an adult and the book had been out for a year or so. Certainly, none of the graphic details of this book made it into the Irvington Herald or the Newark Star Ledger. Yes, it's graphic and I find the person a complete coward for spilling his guts in order to go into the witness protection program. He is a cold blooded murderer and should have been given no lenience whatsoever. He made the papers some time ago for supposedly attempting to run for some type of government office where he lived. Not only did I know this family, but the two men with the same first name but different color last names were acquaintances of my father. I never knew this until I was an adult with children of my own. He told me stories that made the hairs on my neck stand up. My sympathies go to my friend who went through terrible scrutiny for something she had nothing to do with. She was an innocent child and teenager. After she divorced, she kept her married name because she did not want to face the embarrassment of carrying a name that had such horrid memories. This book is extremely graphic and shows you exactly the type ruthless, cold blooded people they truly are. Anyone who glorifies organized crime should read this book.

I REMEMBER THE STORIES !!!!

I grew up in Irvington, NJ and knew most of the people in this book. Everyone was related to someone back then. Even my mom's hairdresser is the wife of one of the men. This book, although upsetting, brings back memories....good, bad and indifferent. I have read this book 4 times at different stages of my life and STILL find it fascinating. Ira Peznick, the man who tells the story (the one who rats them out) did it all for his OWN profit. He was a murderer just the same as those he squealed on yet he gets protection!! Go figure!! The book is True, the people are REAL, the places are CORRECT, the memories still HAUNT. The families still feel SHAME....I KNOW!! The stories have been passed down over the years and the men involved, (if not dead already) still feel remorse. All those from NEWARK, IRVINGTON, BELLEVILLE, THE ORANGES, and NEW JERSEY IN GENERAL SHOULD READ THIS BOOK!!

Wild and Bold Statements Made but No Scientific Validity & Poorly Written

This was a textbook thrust upon me as a student of Horovitz's, and there are some Art Therapy assessments in this book that she herself created and strongly implies throughout this book that her assessments are widely accepted in the AT community....except there's been zero replication studies or validity studies of any of her assessments. So there's no science to back her claims about her assessments, although she makes bold claims that her assessments are able to do and predict all kinds of things. There are spelling errors and grammatical errors in some locations, and this book offers only a very brief, and at times incomplete, overview of how to set up and conduct Art Therapy assessments from widely known AT assessments to very obscure ones....to her own. If you value your reputation as a clinician look elsewhere.
