Perfect book for getting my child ready for K

I'm a new mother with a law degree. Needless to say, I don't know much about early childhood development. I was concerned about what was "normal" for pre-school children and what was expected of them before they entered the classroom. This book was amazing! It covered every possible question I could have thought of, as well as a few handy tips for discipline. I find myself refering to it constantly, and feel much more confident about my child's readiness and social skills. This book is a MUST for anyone with pre-school children.

Full time Dad praises Lukken's book

As a recently divorced man with full time custody of three preschoolers, I was desparate for information about making sure my kids would succeed in school. A friend at work suggested this book and it has been a great help to me. Basically, I learned to trust my instincts, and just knowing where to look for answers was a great relief. The author did a good job of covering all the bases. (This is a good book to have on the shelf for reference of the stages of childhood, what's normal, what's not.)

About the Author
Ronald L. Mendell worked as a legal investigator for thirteen years inquiring into diverse cases ranging from product liability to medical malpractice to financial investigations. He holds a B.S. degree in the Humanities from the University of the State of New York. Currently, he writes on science, technology, and investigative issues. His prior book, How to Do Financial Asset Investigations, 2nd edition, was released by Charles C Thomas, Publisher, Ltd. in late spring 2000. Charles C Thomas also published his book Investigating Computer Crime: A Primer for Security Managers in 1998. He currently works in technical support for a high-tech company in Austin, Texas.

A "Can't Do Without" for Security Professionals

I came across this book as I did my advanced degree in competitive intelligence at American Military University.

With globalization, outsourcing, consolidation, convergence and the constantly advancing information age in which we find ourselves today, it has become more challenging for businesses and organizations to reconcile the necessity to be inclusive and open with the need for security. Chances for unwitting and seemingly unavoidable loss of competitive secrets have multiplied, even as information thieves have become more stealthy; always seeming to be a step ahead of contemporary security measures. Mendell shows how twenty-first century business dynamics have made it such that partners and associates are easily turning to aggressors before some companies realize it. This is not fear-mongering. The threats are real , as this book shows. The threat to the integrity of the competitive information of US firms is quite serious. Yet, such information seem to be at the mercy of highly sophisticated and motivated national and international information hoodlums. But no more can these thugs operate with ease. In The Quite Threat, Mr. Mendell has crafted a handbook for every company or organization in the United States that has any competitive secret at all to protect. Indeed, as the book states, "friendly competitors don't exist - whether domestic of foreign." Yet, this book goes beyond enabling security professionals to sharpen their skills as spy catchers, but to make them super experts in counterintelligence and as collectors of intelligence themselves. In other words this book emphasizes proactive intelligence strategies more than reactive techniques. Indeed, it creates agents on the offensive. My fear is that in spite of this book, many firms will still underestimate the threat that they face until something happens, when the damage is already done. I decry the fact that despite the sordid espionage cases that abound, as this book shows, many executives still think that it can't happen to them until it's too late.

There are many other books that address corporate espionage but, I seriously recommend this book because it is very comprehensive and yet precise - with only about 184 information-packed pages (Nwankama Nwankama).

A review that is actually about the book

I was able to find this book in the library after it was discovered that Mark Felt was indeed Deep Throat. The book overall is a good, fast read, but don't expect to get any inside story about being Deep Throat (which he denies several times in the book). What the book is instead is a solid description of the FBI bureaucracy, especially in the 60s and early 70s.

More importantly from a historical perspective is that this book is also an unapologetic defense of his mentor J. Edgar Hoover. For example, he characterizes Hoover as being more pro-civil rights than just about anyone else in Washington, such as being against the Japanese internment camps in World War II, refusing to bug offices of a President's opponents etc. Hoover apparently was more pro-civil liberties than Felt himself, as Hoover tried to pull the plug on certain illegal activities which Felt allowed to continue. He refutes many of the dark allegations made against Hoover, such as the investigation of Martin Luther King, although I don't have the background to know if his description of these issues is accurate. Still, it is very interesting to get an alternative point of view on the subject.

Felt is very even-handed, as he complains almost as much about the Kennedy administration (especially the Attorney General RFK) as he does about Nixon. He complains that both Kennedy and Truman did not take the Red Menace seriously enough. The one organization to which he had unqualified loyalty was the FBI itself. Because of this, Felt resents the attempts by both the Kennedy and Nixon administrations to interfere with FBI investigations.

The book is not perfect. True to his career as an adminstrator, he sometimes spends too much time describing bureaucratic minutiae that do not have much relevance to the story. That being said, the book gives a fascinating description of the late Hoover era at the FBI, and shows at least some of the motivation, if not the exact details, of why Felt became Deep Throat.

Making His Mark on History

This very readable 1979 book has 351 pages but lacks an index and a table of contents to his life in the FBI. Felt's recollection of events was refreshed by FBI records, Senate and House reports, and the Nixon tapes. Neither personal malice nor selfish motivations colored his actions or judgment at any time in his career (p.12). After J. Edgar Hoover died Felt, the #2 man, stayed to help the new Acting Director (who had no experience with law enforcement but many years as a Nixon loyalist). Felt resents "political considerations" imposed on the FBI; yet politics created the Bureau of Investigations. Shouldn't he advocate placing the FBI under Civil Service, like the US Secret Service? When the Secret Service convicted a Senator and Congressman for the Teapot Dome scandal, Congress cut their budget; later FDR reassigned counter-intelligence from the SS to the FBI. FDR depended on J. Edgar Hoover to get reports on the personal life of FDR's friends and enemies. Hoover's gathering of "dirt" on Congressmen and others was a form of pre-emptive defense necessary to political life in America (p.207).

Felt says the actions of the FBI neutralized the threat of terrorism from Al Fatah, the Jewish Defense League, and the Weather Underground (p.13). Felt warns against any complacency since terrorism can return (p.14)! The following chapters tell of his career and the events that propelled him to the top of the FBI Pyramid. Felt gives his side on the "palace intrigue" and his disagreements with William C. Sullivan. [Sullivan was shot before he could testify to the House Select Committee that Investigated Assassinations.] New agents were assigned to four different Field offices in their first four years. There were financial and personal hardships in this (p.25). Felt's reports were terse, succinct, and relevant. This attracted favorable notice (p.27). As a novice in the Espionage Section he uncovered a Nazi spy that had been overlooked (p.32). Chapter 4 tells of his career promotions, 1945-1958. Chapter 5 discusses the fallacy of life insurance weight charts, and the use of anonymous letters for revenge. Chapter 6 explains why errors had to found, and "carefully evaluated". Chapter 7 tells of Felt's skills in solving problems. Felt discusses the FBI's inactivities in the 1960s (pp.104-105); could Hoover have feared Congressional payback? About half the book concerns his last years from 1971 to 1978, and the events of those years.

In June 1971 Jack Anderson reported that an anti-trust case against ITT was settled for a $400,000 campaign contribution (p.166). [Was this a unique occurrence? Were charges brought against ITT to shake them down?] Felt's recollection of the Tytell typewriter is slyly inaccurate and shows his problem solving skills (p.171). Hoover's death shocked Felt, since there was no sign of ill health (p.179). Felt defends Hoover's use of FBI personnel at his house as needed for security purposes (p.204). [Note problem-solving skills!] As to leaking stories to Woodward & Bernstein, Felt says he didn't leak "anything to anybody" (p.225). Felt has a non-denial denial on page 226. [Anyone who says Felt absolutely denied being "Deep Throat" didn't read this closely.] Felt explains the "Official and Confidential Files" (pp.228-229). The reason for files on politicians was "to facilitate liaison" (p.233). [How clever!] Chapter 18 tells of their investigation into the Watergate burglary. Even J. Edgar Hoover couldn't have stopped them (pp.258-259). Chapter 19 gives Felt's account of the Wounded Knee incident. Chapter 20 tells why L. Patrick Gray was an "ineffective leader" (p.278). Felt's account of W. Chambers resignation is inaccurate (p.295). After disagreeing with Ruckelshaus' political ploys, Felt resigned (p.303). Later Ruckelshaus did the same (Saturday Night Massacre). Felt's refusal to testify against Patrick Gray led to his indictment for his investigation of the Weather Underground (Chapter 23). [Was that quote of T. Jefferson taken out of context (p.315)?] Did opposition to the Vietnam War really delay the final peace agreement (p.318)? In discussing militant organizations, Felt doesn't mention any part played by agents-provocateurs to create lawlessness (p.320). Felt explains his justification for "black bag jobs" (p.323). His prosecution was due to deceit and double-dealing by the Justice Dept. he said (p.343).

My father has been in the security business since 1984. After the first "search inside" I knew this reference was definitively a must. When finally had it on my hands I knew I wasn't wrong, it includes practically all that you otherwise would had learned after many years of intensive practice and research. Incomparable. A work entitled to great respect.

This author wrote a book on this subject on or about 1971 and I was somewhat disappointed in that edition at that time. This book is another world. You would not think this was the same writer. It may have taken thirty years or so but it was well worth the wait. I do not think there is another book available on this subject that can even begin to compare with this creation.
Rarely will you have the opportunity to read such a definitive work on any subject. Clearly this author has made this his life's work. Those who have need of a definitive, all encompassing, and detailed treatise on a subject that effects all aspects of public safety will need and want this book. You can do no better. The coverage is extraordinary and includes: An historical view and understanding going back thousands of years; Detailed and technical discussion of the evolution of protective devices and the methods used to overcome them; Current and timely information on devices now available with an in depth explanation of their differences, effectiveness, and workability; Forensic examination; Standards and Testing; and more, more, more.
This book goes way beyond the basic needs of a Locksmith or Technician into the realm of Academic Instruction into all aspects of physical device security. For the Locksmith, Detective or other Safety Professional weeks of pleasurable reading and education await you in this tomb. When you climb out let me know. The only errors I have found so far have been typographical so this work appears to be fully authorative. Any attorney engaged in litigation in this subject area must have this book. The knowledge contained herein can prevent embarrassment for any government official with responsibility for physical device security. This book can aid in job security for various occupations. It will save countless hours of research into difficult to obtain references. There is also available a CD Rom with additional information.
My hat is off to this author. Normally a book like this is a collaboration of many people. I can see how it took 30 years to do it alone...

are poodles still good eating?

Somewhere in a box at my father's home is a abused beaten up copy of this magnificent text. I see some future historian stumbling over this book, in some distant millennium and wondering what in the hell is going on here. Was this the 20th Century? Looking around at the slobbering, still biting, yackeddy yackeddy misbred poodles that will be inhabiting our poor planet even centuries hence, the discoverer will surely see these dimunations as the true source of all of man's folly, and realize, like Steve Martin so aptly does in his work, that man can only be saved when one sees poodles as good eating.
Mr Martin's genius is on display throughout the text. Not even Congressman Henry Waxman could see the even greater danger that is in store for the cigarette smoker.This book clearly reveals how cigarettes can lead, in there folly, to a lip shortage that nobody can truly desire.
The absence of this book from current shelves can only be descibed as a national tragedy, with maybe even a conspiracy angle to boot (take note Oliver Stone). Someone must rectify this now (with perhaps an annotated edition (with all of the completely new pictures that the cover claimed were inside), before the bridge to the future is rusting and littered with poodle droppings. A Comic's Classic

Cruel Shoes is Steve Martin's masterpiece book. While some of the passages seem to make little to no sense, other passages are laugh-out-loud brilliant.
The best passages in the this book are "Cruel Shoes" and "The Diarrhea Gardens of El Camino Real". These passages poke fun at women's desire for shoes and environmentalists with the wrong idea. Other classics include "The Turds", "Wrong Number", and "Comedy Events You Can Do". "The Last Thing on My Mind" is the kind of thought prvoking comedy that is the trademark of George Carlin. "Society in Aspen" also has its moments including naming Jesus as a frequent horse shoe player.
The only soft spot in the book is the poetry. I am not sure where Martin was going with it, but it really does not work. Also many of the pages are pictures which seems somewhat wasteful when the pictures are poor quality.
With all of the classic humor in the book, there is no reason it should be out of print. It is a bargain at the available used prices.

Section III presents a collection of both case studies and special life-threatening scenarios that workers and leaders in security operations may face. The training of new police officers in Kosovo and of local demining teams in Sudan and Iraq are addressed, including the contagion in the use of deadly force by police and security workers. High time for an integrated look at security operations

This book comes at an opportune time, providing insights into the selection, training, and sustainment of human beings involved in the full spectrum of security operations, and makes important recommendations for improvement. The authors define security operations as the broad range of activities aimed at establishing and maintaining basic security for people and protecting their lives and safety. Military forces around the world are involved increasingly in missions that entail security operations, missions ranging from humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, peacekeeping, stabilization and reconstruction, to combat operations, including counterinsurgency. These operations are also complex in that they usually require extensive coordination and cooperation among civilian and military groups, as well as international partners. Modern operations are also multi-faceted and changeable. What starts out as a disaster relief mission can blend into humanitarian assistance and reconstruction and at any time can call for security actions to safeguard relief workers, supplies, and the local people. In the case of the United States, for example, our military forces are stretched thin with multiple operational engagements. At the same time, the military organization as a whole is short on the types of units more in demand today, such as military police, civil military affairs, medical, engineers, and transportation. And there is a pressing need for more effective training programs to prepare these personnel for the diverse demands of modern complex operations. This point also applies to our NATO partner countries, which face the same increasing complexity and challenges implementing NATO's Comprehensive Approach. The present volume, assembled by some of the foremost thinkers in the field of psychology and human performance, provides an invaluable compendium of theory, research, and practice that can be used to guide the development of more effective training approaches and policies in this area.

A special value of this book is that it brings to bear both military and civilian views on the challenges of security operations and other high-risk jobs. We are over dependent on the military today to perform too many jobs, in many cases jobs that civilian agencies are better able to perform. But despite their greater functional expertise in certain areas, our civilian agencies mostly lack the capacity to deploy adequate numbers of properly trained personnel to operational environments. This is true to a greater or lesser extent for the U.S. Department of State and the Agency for International Development, and the Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Education, Justice, and Homeland Security. In the domain of stability operations, which should be considered a core skill area for military forces, there are many scenarios for which civilian law enforcement experts may be equally or even better suited. But they need to be trained and prepared to function effectively in what may be austere, rapidly changing, and stressful environments. The chapters are replete with valuable insights for how to do this, insights that can be applied not only to forces involved in stability and security operations, but also in other kinds of demanding operational environments, both foreign and domestic. By integrating civilian law enforcement and military perspectives, this book also serves as a model for the kind of cooperation and sharing of knowledge across traditional organizational boundaries that is needed for success in future operations.
