About the Author
Bonnie S. Fisher is Professor in the School of Criminal Justice and a research Fellow at the Center for Criminal Justice Research at the University of Cincinnati. She has authored or co-authored more than 150 scholarly publications and has co-edited four volumes that focus on victimization issues. Professor Fisher was an honorary visiting scholar at the University of Leicester, Scarman Centre in the UK; a visiting scholar in the Division of Prevention and Community Research at the Consultation Center at Yale University School of Medicine; and a Visiting Professor in the Department of Sociology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

John J. Sloan III is Associate Professor of Criminal Justice and Sociology and Chair of the Department of Justice Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He has authored or co-authored more than 100 scholarly articles, book chapters, research reports, and presentations and co-edited two previous books on campus crime. Professor Sloan has been a Research Scientist at the Institute for the Study of Children and Families at Eastern Michigan University, as well as Visiting Professor of Criminal Justice at the universities of Alabama and West Florida.

Homicide...excellent source of information for crime buffs.

I find this forensic manual to be very informative and absolutely indepensable not only for criminal investigators and coronors, but also serious crime buffs.

The books is profusely illustrated with graphic details of what to look for in discovering a cadaver which has either been mutilated, drowned in water, burnt with fire or killed with bullets.

The rich description of different homicides from many perspective make the book a source of constant reference to all those who are concerned with untimely death investigations.

This reference manual should not be considered as gory as homicide investigations are not pleasant affairs but for coroners, police officers, life insurance agents and last but not the least, serious crime buffs who want to read factual information. Go for it though the price may be a bit stiff.

There is no other homicide manual like it ever written...!

A Primer for the Police – or TV Fans

Homicide Investigations

LeMoyne Snyder is a member of the AMA and the ABA. The majority of serious crimes are committed by career criminals who are often identified by "lines of information". The majority of homicides are not committed by professional criminals. Scientific training is needed to distinguish homicides from suicides. This book was written to improve police investigations by preserving evidence so it is neither contaminated or destroyed, and to tell how to get scientific assistance to prepare a case for court. August Vollmer said it should be required reading for all policemen (p.vii). [Readers of true crime and mysteries could also benefit.] In the `Preface' LeMoyne Snyder said there were few organizations in the US or Canada like the medicolegal institutes in Europe and Latin America to investigate violent deaths [as of the 1940s]. The purpose of this book is to provide practical plans of procedure to adequately investigate deaths for those without scientific training. Each chapter contains a brief section on the medical aspects to aid a coroner prior to an autopsy and avoid serious errors of omission or commission. The `Acknowledgments' thank the many who contributed to this book, especially the group from Harvard Medical School. Erle Stanley Gardner also contributed (his novels often used little-known medical facts). Chapter 20 explains why this book was written. A dead body was found in a kitchen. No notes were made, no photographs taken, no search for fingerprints or other evidence. The autopsy was perfunctory. The crime scene was cleaned up. When a suspect was arrested the lack of evidence set him free. If only they knew what to do!

Chapter 5 discusses the identification of dead bodies, and tells of one case where Snyder recognized a dead friend after an apartment fire. The next day he found his friend was in fact alive (p.51)! A lip print can identify a person ("The Case of the Crimson Kiss"). A pelvis identifies the sex of an skeleton (p.62), and can indicate the age (p.63). Chapter 7 discusses gunshot wounds. Typically wounds of entrance are neat round holes. Wounds of exit are larger, ragged, torn, and bloodier (pp.106-107). Pages 113-116 note the effects of "tattooing". Chapter 13 deals with poisoning. It is very important to have an accurate history of the events preceding death to provide a clue to the type of poisoning. If a poison does not work other means may be used. Chapter 19 tells of the popular fallacies about murder. "Murder will out"? The number of unsolved homicides is enormous. The murderer rarely returns to the scene of the crime. A gunshot wound through the heart does not always cause instant death. Photographs can lie depending on the lens, the height of the camera, the type of film, or the distance from the object. Can a fortune teller give valuable information? Snyder knows of no such cases. A dead man can tell a tale if there was care and diligence in the investigation and the laboratory tests.

Nice Try but No Cigar

The authors of this text say that their aim was to provide, in an affordable text of 300 pages, all the information a medical student needs about cellular biology. They've done a fair job of it, but I think they're confused about where in the curriculum it belongs.
The text actually runs to a bit over 300 pages. It is divided into only 9 chapters; and each chapter contains a variable number of sections. Unfortunately, the chapters are uneven in terms of quality and quantity of content. Cell signaling, for instance, is given fairly short shrift, while the mechanics of transcription, translation, and protein assembly go on forever. In addition, the authors don't seem to have a solid idea of the background of their hypothetical medical student audience: they assume the reader knows the difference between the 3' and 5' ends of polymerized nucleic acids, but isn't already familiar with the citric acid cycle. This is a bit reflective, I suppose, of the wide variance in science preparation among medical students, where on the one hand you have biochemistry majors, and on the other journalism graduates with a bare minimum of science.
Another problem concerns the enclosed disk, which does not contain all the necessary files for installation (the missing ones must be downloaded from the publisher's website). Unlike the electronic component of many basic science texts, this disk, once installed, contains only drill-and-practice mock National Board questions, without any electronic enhancement of content.
All things concerned, an A for effort, but a C- for outcome.

I own this book. It's a waste of money since it's really an "introduction" to cell biology. All the data contained are superficial and aberrant from medical course.

A delicious collection of Gorey's dark and twisted humor.

I was introduced to this book by a friend of mine whose sense of humor is almost as twisted as that of Gorey himself. He delighted in sharing with me "The Gashlycrumb Tinies" (in which small children meet their doom in alphabetical order) and "The Curious Sofa: a pornographic tale" (in which Gorey lays sexual innuendo so thick that it becomes absurd and absolutely hilarious). After wresting the book from the aforementioned friend's hands, I read the rest of it. To my delight I found morbid limericks and quatrains, stories apparently composed of random sentences, and tales of tales of mishap and tragedy--each accompanied by illustrations in Gorey's macabre style. I would recommend this collection to anyone who has outgrown Dr. Seuss but still wants to look at the pictures.

No-nonsense verse, a very necessary composition

Edward Gorey was a master of the macabre. Seemingly inappropriate, always bizarre, Mr. Gorey walked the taboo tightrope in his stories and illustrations. Here are fifteen such delightfully atrocious tales, compiled for the convenience of his very demented fans (including yours truly).
First is "The Unstrung Harp" about a befuddled and (in appearance) paranoid writer who trudges through his maddening existence, as so many a writer inevitably will. The casual reader might find this tale odd, but anyone who has ever taken to writing seriously will feel nothing but empathy. Has one of the greatest ending lines of any story I've ever read.
Next is "The Listing Attic", a series of devilish ryhmes with correlating illustrations. Many of these are horrible in design yet strangely you'll find yourself laughing at the unfortunate mishaps that fall upon the characters.
Now, on to "The Doubtful Guest" about a mysterious penguin-like creature that arrives at a residence only to act in a seemingly irrational way, doing things for inexplicable reasons. Personally I think this is nothing more than a metaphor for the unexpected in life and how it's more irrational for people to waste time trying to make sense out of these things. But that's just me.
"The Object Lesson" is just plain confusing, as if Mr. Gorey was just penning random thoughts and then illustrating them. Definitely weird.
"The Bug Book" is pretty childish in design and, to me, not particuarly noteworthy.
"The Fatal Lozenge" is another series of ryhmes, although the level of morbidity and violence is pretty much maxed out. Reading these you won't find yourself able to laugh, only maybe able to produce a nervous twitter as you ponder how very real these situations could be.
"The Hapless Child" is nothing short of a masterpiece, evoking every emotion from love to terror this tragedy should have a place in American high school curriculum, but alas public education systems in this nation would rather not deal with horrible reality.
"The Curious Sofa" is an attack on preconceived notions of sexual morality, being pornographic only in suggestion the point is that if someone who considered him/herself to be in the right in his/her sexual ideals he/she wouldn't understand the innuendo of the words and illustrations. A very interesting piece.
"The Willowdale Handcar" is a story I didn't like.
"The Gashlycrumb Tinies" has to be my favorite Edward Gorey piece, a sinister telling of the Alphabet with a small child meeting its demise for each letter, kind of an anti-Alligators All Around. I have a separate review posted for this story as it is deserving of the title of literature.
"The Insect God" is another disturbing work involving intelligent, and apparently religious, giant sized bugs.
"The West Wing" is a series of illustrations that force the reader to create his/her own captions for what is depicted.
"The Wuggly Ump" is a silly song about a very hungry monster.
"The Sinking Spell" is another tale of an unexpected visitor, a creature on an indecipherable journey.
Last, is "The Remembered Visit" about a woman who can't forget the odd travels of her youth or her meeting of a once famous man.
That's it, the coffee table book to beat all coffee table books, the ultimate conversation piece. But, then again, everything Edward Gorey did was worthy of conversation.

Makes Economic Sense, If Nothing Else

If for no other reason than cost-efficiency, you ought to buy this collection of the late Edward Gorey's books; it doesn't cost very much more than the individual hard-cover original editions of the fifteen books collected here.
Most people will recognise Gorey as the designer of the credits for the long-running PBS series "Mystery!", if nothing else; but he is so much more.
If i were forced to guess, based strictly on the contents of the fifteen volumes collected here, i would have had to say that Edward Gorey was obviously an elderly and somewhat dotty Englishman. As a matter of fact, he was neither elderly nor English -- but that's the type of material he excelled at; that somewhat macabre but utterly devastating straight-faced black humour that seems to a Mere Colonial such as myself as Utterly British.
One could, for instance, question whether the untimely demise of twenty-six children -- in alphabetical order, with lovingly-rendered illustrations of their antepenultimate moments -- was a fit subject for humour. Whether or not it is becomes a moot question almost as soon as one begins reading "The Gashleycrumb Tinies" -- "'A' is for ANNA, who fell down the stairs. 'B' is for BASIL, assaulted by Bears..." Sick or not, if you can read all twenty-six pages of this little monograph and not laugh, there is something wrong with you.
Possibly the best thing in the book -- though it's *all* excellent -- is "The Unstrung Harp, or, Mr Earbrass Writes a Novel", which has been described by an acquaintance who works as an editor at a major New York publisher as one of the more accurate portrayals of the process he has ever read. {Horrifyingly so, i inferred from his comments.}
Rather gentler and more restrained and cultured than the work of Gahan Wilson, a bit less anarchic than "The Far Side", this is still a wonderful antidote to all of society's little hypocrisies and refusals to face the reality of the gleeful darkness that every one of us has (generally fairly well hidden) somewhere in our soul.

Excellent

This book was wonderful. This book helped me to understand what I was dealing with and that I am not alone. I have not been able to locate another book that describes with as much details as this one has. The author gives new insight on how to relate with sexually abused children and innovative therapy procedures. Overall, a Godsend of a book!

No Ordinary Life

I am rearing two young boys who were brutally,sexually abused. They have been in counseling for 2 1/2 years. The counselors are great, yet they do not address the sexual abuse. Their intro to all counseling with the boys is "We know that you have experienced horrible things but you must control your anger and not take it out on those around you." The whole experience has been frustrating. I have been constantly searching for answers in effective ways to help these boys. When I read "No Ordinary Life" I felt that most of the time I was reading about these two precious, but angry and confused, boys. I now feel like I have a blue print by which to judge their current counseling, and to seek out counseling by someone who will truly counsel and direct our boys in a way that will honestly help them to live their lives and acknowlege verbally the abuse, putting themselves on a path to improve their lives. When I bought the book I thought it was a little "pricey"; however, I now know that it was worth one hundred times more than I paid. If the option existed, I would give the book ten stars.

I really like this book

I'm still not done reading this book, but I just wanted to share my thoughts: I really like this book. It is well written, it is full of case studies and examples, and it gives solid reasons behind the theories it suggests. This book is probably too heavy to give to children suffering from sexual abuse, but that isn't its intended audience. As a Child Advocate, I feel comfortable giving a copy of this book to the parents I deal with on a day to day basis with the questions of, "How could this happen to us?" "Why didn't I notice anthing was wrong?" and "What can I do to help my child?"

Rather than offering a scholarly treatment for professionals, this book is intended to pique the interest of undergraduate students in psychology and mental health fields. Written to be accessible to all, including general readers, the book includes chapters on how to identify and deal with subclinical psychopaths and gives advice on what to do if your romantic partner turns out to be a subclinical psychopath. The book begins by defining the differences between sociopath, psychopath, and antisocial personality disorder, then reviews the history of research, defines characteristics, and reports on current science on the psychopathic brain.
