There are principles of memory retrieval so that the reader will understand why to employ specific techniques -- for example, when to use open-ended versus direct short-answer questions, effective use of pauses, asking follow-up questions, cues to name and number recall, etc. There is the strategy of interview sequential structure -- that is, what to probe for at the beginning, middle, and end of the interview. Also included are practical exercises and real-world experiences. The book will also be helpful for attorneys in conducting investigative interviews.

Cognitive Psychology for Detectives

This book is the classic reference for applying principles of cognitive psychology to investigative interviewing. It focuses on helping witnesses remember accurately, given how our minds and memories naturally work. It deals less with issues of detecting deception and motivating uncooperative witnesses to tell the truth.

The book's thirteen chapters outline the requirements of investigative interviewing and the basics of human cognition as they build toward the author's model of successful cognitive interviewing. Initial chapters discuss the problems inherent in eyewitness accounts of crimes and the need to structure interviews to obtain accurate information from even the most cooperative witness. Readers learn the basic dynamics of an interview, how to choose the best setting and how to ask effective questions and overcome barriers that stand in the way of good answers.

Later chapters introduce principles of human cognition and apply them to the demands of interviewing. Lessons learned include techniques for recreating the context of a witnessed event, strategies for probing to get additional detail, and sequencing from open-ended to specific, detail oriented closed-ended questions. A later chapter includes annotated transcripts of two interviews which illustrate and highlight these techniques.

The capstone chapter outlines a training and practice regimen for acquiring the thirteen basic skills of cognitive interviewing. These skills are (from p. 186):

--2. Listen actively
--3. Tell eyewitnesses to actively generate info (don't wait passively)
--4. Ask open-ended questions
--5. Pause before asking follow-up questions
--6. Don't interrupt
--7. Explicitly request detailed descriptions
--8. Encourage eyewitnesses to concentrate intensely
--9. Encourage eyewitnesses to use imagery
-10. Recreate the original event's context
-11. Adopt the eyewitness's perspective
-12. Ask eyewitness-compatible questions
-13. Follow the Cognitive Interview sequence

This is an interesting read from the history of interviewing and cognitive psychology. Practitioners looking for a more current evolution of cognitive investigative interviewing may prefer Pauletta Otis's Educing Information: Interrogation Science and Art. Also, Fisher and Geiselman's techniques should not be confused with the "cognitive interviewing" approach to improving survey questionnaires described in Cognitive Interviewing: A Tool for Improving Questionnaire Design by Gordon Willis.

Every investigator should be familiar with the CI!

As every investigator knows, well articulated eyewitness statements are essential to any good case. The CI is the most effective and proven non-hypnotic victim/witness interview that I am aware of. This book presents the principles of effective interviewing in a very clear and easy to understand manner. It is not loaded with useless theory, but rather very practical techniques to use as well as those to avoid.

Every so often an author appears with an uncanny knack for making difficult, higher order concepts easily translatable to simple, comprehensible information. This rare talent takes incredible skill, a keen understanding of both the subject matter and knowledge of how to convey it in a manner making it an effortless and extremely interesting read.

Such is the case with Dr. Laurence Miller and his latest book, Criminal Psychology: Nature, Nurture, Culture, (2012, Charles C. Thomas, Publisher). Dr. Miller is the author of many well-received, peer-reviewed, scholarly articles as well as books on his work with police psychology, human relations, and other applied aspects of clinical and forensic psychology. He is also affiliated with various police agencies as a psychologist, and teaches psychology at the university graduate and undergraduate levels. This time, his Criminal Psychology breaks new ground by weaving together the fields of law enforcement, criminal justice, mental health, and forensic psychology.
Dr. Miller's tome (588 pages) is an embarrassment of riches on these topics, and they are each carefully delineated and presented with simple, pragmatic language resulting in a book that should be viewed as "The Bible" for those interested in the field of criminal psychology.

Criminal Psychology is divided into five major parts. In Part I, Dr. Miller thoroughly covers the nature and origins of criminal behavior and includes theoretical perspectives, empirical support, and his own clinical acumen in discussing the biological and psychosocial theories of criminal behavior. There is an excellent, comprehensive discussion, in particular, of the various parts of the criminal justice system and the interplay of clinical and forensic psychology within it.

In Part II, Dr. Miller focuses on personality, psychopathology, and crime, and provides critical information on brain syndromes and substance abuse, schizophrenia and psychotic disorders, anxiety and mood disorders, personality disorders, and antisocial personality disorder and the psychopath. Here, in particular, Dr. Miller is particularly adept at explaining the interplay between brain and behavior relationships, and relates how brain disease and/or traumatic injury can evolve into violent, criminal, and unstable behavior which may be causative in an individual's involvement with unlawful activities. Especially interesting for example, are Dr. Miller's discussions of the relationships between types of epilepsy and various clinical syndromes resulting in criminal behavior. In this section, there are also important discussions of traumatic brain injury, sleep disorders, and developmental disorders and how brain syndromes may be associated with criminal behavior.
Parts III, IV, and V, in particular, seem most relevant in today's world. In Part III, Dr. Miller discusses homicide, serial homicide, and mass homicides and violence in the workplace, schools, and terrorism and political violence. There is an excellent delineation of the different subtypes of homicides, including prosecutable and nonprosecutable homicides, with further discussions elaborating serial killers, spree killers, and mass murderers. Demographics of homicides, including biological, neuropsychological, and sociocultural theories are presented via empirically-based support. Dr. Miller then astutely weaves his professional experience and learned clinical and forensic psychological background with how mental disorders, personality disorders, and brain syndromes may have causative roles when a homicide occurs. Of particular interest and a "hot topic" in schools today is bullying, and Dr. Miller's discussion of bullying and peer victimization includes types of bullies as well as types of victims, and factors that contribute to bullying as well as theoretical considerations are well thought out and should be considered mandatory reading by school personnel such as principals and assistant principals, school psychologists, school social workers, and school counselors.

Part IV of Criminal Psychology concerns sex crimes and family crimes. Rape and sexual assault are discussed with emphasis on the psychology and psychopathology of rapists, their psychological dynamics, and topics such as sexual sadism and the perversions or paraphilias. The influence of substance abuse on sexual crimes and theoretical perspectives such as neuropsychological, psychodynamic, behavioral, feminist, and evolutionary theories make for an interesting and informative discussion. With respect to family crimes (i.e., child abuse and domestic violence), Dr. Miller again is timely with discussions on child sexual abuse by clergy, pedophile typologies, child battery and murder, and eloquent discussions on the psychology of parents, caregivers, and guardians who murder children. There is a section on "Parricide," the killing of parents by their children with extensive background coverage of the family dynamics as well as the psychosocial contributory factors leading children to commit such crimes.
In Part V of Criminal Psychology, Dr. Miller discusses stalking and harassment and provides us once again with an excellent discussion of stalker typologies, behaviors, commonalities, and then reviews how the psychology of stalking fits with specific clinical syndromes. Particularly important are stalker violence, effects of stalking on victims as well as cyberstalking. Part V also contains sections on juvenile offenders and their crimes, hate crimes, arson and pyromania, and mentally ill offenders and whether or not the intervention of psychological treatments may be effective.

Overall, we have here a "must read," or the "Gold Standard" of criminal psychology, and this book will be used and referred to again and again by federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, clinical and forensic psychologist-specialists in psychology and social work, undergraduate and graduate students with an interest in criminal psychology, and in university and public libraries for public consumption. The Bibliography, alone, is a valuable, 200 page reference guide for those studying criminal, forensic, clinical, and school psychology. Dr. Miller's Criminal Psychology presents a wealth of information that is up-to-date, less hypothetical and mostly empirical, and will be used for years to come as an extraordinary clinical reference tool in understanding human behavior.

This is excellent!

As a public health nursing instructor I have used this book (well the two previous versions) for several years. It provides the best and most complete example of how to "do public health" from a community-focused perspective. It also includes rationale and examples. This provides students with a blue print and how-to manual while also showing the process with a real life community example.

This book is a complete PH text as it also covers all the other usual components of a PH nursing and PH practice. This text is for students, practicing public health nurses, and anyone working with communities to change health and well-being.

What I also love about this book (and what sets it apart from other text books) is that it is community-focused and teaches impact health and well-being from that perspective. Therefore the content is useful for a broad audience.

This text will not teach you to be a "community-based" practitioner (provider). The authors really get it!

Many times I hated not just this book

The course was hard. Many times I hated not just this book, but life itself. Ripping the hair off my arm seemed more merciful. Frankly this course should be used as a CIA torture device. Or a way to drive people insane. It really is that awful. Unless you are deviant who enjoys intricate things with no right answers just for the sake of fun debate. Blah ha ha.

Either way, don't expect any book on this topic to be a dummy's guide. Stay at a Holiday Inn express. Maybe you'll understand it. This book is likely as good as it's gonna get to simplify this course. My book had about a thousand post its with notes. Why? Well you know the image of a dead horse? Yeah they beat it INTO the ground making explanations. And when you're doing, you're wondering where the day went. I can almost speed read and twenty pages took me two days. That's about a chapter. Why? Well I'd read an except, eat massive chocolates, roam the house like a prison, banged my head, dreamed with my eyes open....

Still, the authors tried. One book. One course... You haven't learned a thing. But you can sit and listen to professors have a discussion and understand 10%. You can read a scholarly article and say, hey, I recall that word. I don't know how the heck they did the math, but I know they have nifty computers to do that quantitative research. Hahahahahaha.

Read it anyway. If you decide you want a DSW, you'll do research til you croak. Or if you desperately want an answer to some complex puzzle, you'll have to align with a senior social worker and do this. You'll only learn this by doing. And even then, a lifetime of doing and you won't perfect it. But you gotta start somewhere.

So yes, I hated this book, mainly because the work was just impossibly hard. But that wasn't the books fault. That was the fault of my hard head, exhaustion and difficult concepts. Now that I'm on the other side, I'll hide the book awhile, forget the agony of it, and enjoy reading scholarly articles with more insight and a frame of reference. I can't judge the authors on the material, only their take on it, and it wasn't bad. I don't know anything about anything still, but I can pretend as if I had stayed at the holiday inn express.

Although this textbook was not required for my nursing community health class, I am glad that I did. This book succinctly describes a Public Health Nurse versus a Commuity Health Nurse's jobs,responsibilities, and scope of practice. This book helped me to get an "A" in community health.
