Buchwald's a funny guy, but the material is very dated

This is a compilation of columns written by humorous political columnist Art Buchwald during the presidency of Richard Nixon.

As each one was written "in the moment," without the benefit of historical perspective, it might be difficult to appreciate the nuances which many of the jokes rely upon. In short, I don't think an appreciable amount of material is going to make the casual reader laugh out loud.

But for the Nixon buff, this is an interesting way to experience the Watergate scandal as it unfolds, with each detail giving the likeable Buchwald fodder for his arsenal of wit. As a satirist, of course, most of the columns are negative, so I suppose they might seem funnier to the anti-Nixon buff than the Nixon buff.

Nixon-The President Everyone LOVES.......To Hate

It is now 30+ years since Nixon was forced (hounded?) out of office,
and 13 years since he passed on to the big Oval Office in the sky, yet people, like me, for example, are still obsessed with Richard M Nixon. Why is this? Because he was the (unintentionally) funniest President of all time. As Buchwald states in the forward to this book, as Watergate unfolded, everything the President did or said lent itself to satire.
The only other President who gets close to Nixon in being entertaining is "Slick Willy" Clinton. However, the differences between the two men are instructive. Clinton came of age during the 1960's and he developed the ethos of that era: "If it feels good, do it!", and "what's 'right' is what you can get away with". Clinton's most admired predecessor as President was one who turned the White House into a brothel. Thus, Clinton decided to follow in his footsteps. The voters knew what they were getting when they voted him into power.
Nixon was a whole other story. The product of a pious, Quaker family of stern morals, a conservative politician, a faithful husband and good father (even his worst enemies admit this). Yet this man who, when running for Vice President along with the revered Eisenhower, criticized Harry Truman for using "salty language", left us the legacy of "expletive deleted". The man, who in his final address before flying off into the sunset in San Clemency...err..San Clemente warned people it is wrong to hate others, left us the "enemies list". The man who assured Gerald Ford who was considering becoming his Vice President that he had NOTHING to do with Watergate, started wearing an American Flag lapel pin to show how patriotic and honest he was, as more and more revelations came out about his criminal involvement in the whole mess. What else did he do?....he chose a man totally unqualified to be President as his Vice President (Spiro Agnew) since he didn't want another strong figure in his administration who might challenge him. He unethically recorded all Oval Office conversations without informing those who we was speaking with, and kept them around KNOWING they were evidence of his wrong doing.

I admit someone with no knowledge of Watergate will have difficulty understanding the columns Buchwald included in this book, but for those of
us old enough to remember the "good old days", this book will keep you chuckling for hours as Buchwald reminds us of Rosemary Woods amazing physical agiility, the deaf Senator that Nixon wanted to appoint to listen to the tapes, the 18.5 minute gap and the "Sinister Force" that created it, the "smoking gun", "impoundment" of Federal Funds, Nixon's tax returns, Checkers, Charles Colson's grandmother whom Colson said he would run over in order to get Nixon re-elected, John Dean, John Ehrlichman, Bob Haldemann, Donald Segretti,
Jeb Magruder and all the rest of the gang.

Dated but Funny

Readers get the wit and humor of Art Buchwald (1925-2007) in this collection of daily columns from 1973-74. Those that remember Watergate should chuckle repeatedly from Buchwald's look at embattled President Richard Nixon as the Watergate scandal kept expanding. Readers will learn (or be reminded of) Vice Presidents Spiro Agnew and Gerald Ford, John Dean, John Mitchell, Judge Sirica, Senator Sam Ervin, etc. In his moist and witty pen, Buchwald provides an imaginary conversation between Henry Kissinger and Soviet leader Leonoid Brezhnev (¨Why didn't Nixon just have Congess arrested?¨), offers a Watergate quiz, and has Nixon appear on the TV game show ¨To Tell The Truth.¨ Yes, these columns are dated and a bit repetitious, but provide a humorous look at Watergate and other then-events like the Arab Oil Embargo, and high beef prices (in those days before choleterol worries). This is an amusing collection for anybody with an interest in Watergate and humorous writing.

Good for everyone interested in penitentiary psychology

Great book for those interested in penitentiary psychology. Many psychology graduates have no idea what a psychologist in a prison does. The author gives his first had account of his experience as a prison psychologist, discusses many myths and misconceptions about this type of work.

Interesting and informative, especially in the context of scarcity of books on the subject.

Correctional psychology is one area where clinical psychology and criminal justice converge. Yet, what actually happens to criminal defendants who are sentenced to prison? Who is concerned with their mental health? Why should we even care?
In this volume, psychologist Kevin Correia provides an insider's look into the practice of correctional psychology. The book provides an overview of prison life, which is generally both less volatile and more complex than the garish portrayals shown in movies and on TV. The book helps clarify the often dicey institutional status of a mental health practitioner working in an institutional setting where the primary concern of most other staff is just to keep the lid on. Roles of the correctional psychologist include management consultant (and here, psychologists can score points with skeptical prison staff by providing practical tips on dealing safely with inmates); suicide, violence, and sexual assault prevention; hostage negotiation; family and employee crisis intervention; and psychotherapy, which is likely to be concrete and focused, e.g. substance abuse counseling or sex offender treatment.
The book dives into the nitty-gritty nuances of conducting psychological interventions with prison inmates, including issues of privacy in the fishbowl environment of a correctional facility; developing a healthy skepticism and professional distance to guard against inmate manipulativeness; handling deception and malingering; coping with threats and intimidation; and dealing with severely mentally ill and coldly psychopathic inmates, all the while endeavoring to develop some kind of working therapeutic relationship; The author also provides guidelines for integrating psychological services with the activities of other staff members, so as to forge a collaborative, rather than adversarial, relationship with the people he or she has to work with every day.
Aside from a somewhat overly detailed two-chapter digression on the clinical and psychometric assessment of malingering, this book is crisply written and is suffused with a sense of enthusiasm and optimism that has the reader questioning the standard view of prison psychology as either the wasteful coddling of unrepentent career criminals, or as some baleful professional purgatory that a psychologist might find him- or herself consigned to until a "real" job comes along. Relentlessly realistic, this book nevertheless delineates the important clinical contributions that correctional psychologists can make in a world that most dismiss as hopeless.

Easy to grasp

It did not take me long to finish reading this book. The book is very easy to understand, and very organized in content. It has lots of good points as the "basic rules" for therapeutic staff working in correctional facilities. I have highlighted the valuable information for my own use. I also showed this book to my boss, who thinks it a wonderful book, also.

Great workbook

I have reviewed O'Hara and O'Hara's text, The Fundamentals of Criminal Investigation. I loved it. Here we have the companion workbook and guide for that same text. The textbook is written in such a way that you may not in fact need the study guide, the text is that good. But if you want to review your studies or clarify a topic or process in criminal investigation, then you will want to have this review guide as well. It stays with the text and it's not one of those elementary workbooks that you might otherwise find. While you might make due without this guide if you have the textbook, don't buy this review guide without the actual textbook.

This book was required reading on a promotional examination I recently participated in. I was successful in this endeavor and I give a lot of credit to this study guide. Having read the O'Hara original a few years ago this study guide refreshed my recollections of the original book. Good luck to you.

The authors of this book are a very unique group of professionals. Each author has a minimum of ten years of investigative experience and many have at least thirty-five years of experience. The majority of the authors have investigative experience with large law enforcement agencies, in military service or at all levels of government. The chapters in the book outline some of the specialized areas in which the experienced private investigator may be involved. Each author has written about his or her specialized area based on personal experiences. This tactic eliminates the inconsequential and concentrates on primary issues. Topics covered include: asset search and recovery; competitive intelligence and knowing the adversary; polygraph examination; marine and maritime matters; forensic accounting; investigating employment claims; capital defense investigations; denied party screening; defending the criminally accused; locating missing heirs; the craft of business intelligence; providing personal protection; product diversion; internet profiling; threat assessments and interventions; computer forensics; workers' compensation investigations; insurance investigations; using electronic resources in due diligence investigations; accident investigation and reconstruction; and employee theft.

The goal is for the client to realize the American Dream. The first two parts of the text provide a person-based philosophy and a substantial knowledge base in case management, and the thirteen case studies in the third part allow the reader to investigate the use of best practices and best values in case management. An outstanding group of contributors was selected to author various chapters. Their collective achievements have included agency-executive leadership, university professorships and consultative activities at the state, national, and international levels. Each contributor, as well, has made significant scholarly contributions to the rehabilitation literature. While the text was developed primarily for use in graduate rehabilitation counseling programs, it has great utility for related academic programs in allied health, psychology, social sciences, and special education. The text, also, has practical value for in-service and short term training anywhere that the vocational rehabilitation process can be facilitated from a client-centered perspective.
