Taught me a lot about how to dress

I bought this book as a young teenager and used it for many years as a reference guide for how to dress for occasions where I was unsure how to look. I came from a less-than-privileged background (we weren't poor, but my parents were teachers and there wasn't a lot of money) but many of my friends were from affluent families. My grandmothers and mother are very classy people and they did their best to teach me about how to dress, but they had no experience with, say, dressing for a golf tournament dinner or for a day on a sailboat.

Over the years, through college and my professional career, I would refer back to this book a lot. Yes, the drawings are dated; yes, some of the advice is dated. But there are some great tips in this book about how to buy basics for your wardrobe that will last for years, how to recognize quality fabrics and workmanship, how to combine high-end and low-end items for a complete polished look, what looks always work and what will always be questionable, etc. If you come from a working-class background, but because of your job or your spouse's social status you need to socialize with affluent people, it is great to have a guide telling you what works and what doesn't, and how not to make a fool out of yourself. That is what this book did for me. Over the years I have used the advice in the book over and over, to build a classic, conservative, professional wardrobe that helps me whether I am going to an important meeting at work or a black-tie charity function.

There are some sections of the book that you have to take with a grain of salt, especially since now this book is over 20 years old. But if you are totally at a loss about what to wear to a given social event, or you feel you're at a disadvantage because you socialize with people who can afford much better clothes than you can, this book is a great primer about what to wear. It's a classic, and the advice is still as relevant today as it was back when the book was written.

Emphasis on quality

This book really encourages you to clean up your closet getting rid of the cheap looking pieces. It helps you to create a wardrobe of more quality and if you follow all the up to date advice, discarding what can no longer be used in today's society, you will never be overdressed or underdressed (don't know which is worse...:)).

It also teaches you a bit about different fabrics, which is helpful if you don't know anything about them.

The book talks about a bunch of different dressing styles. Personally I would never make one of them my own, but nevertheless I enjoyed reading about them.

After reading this book I went through my closet and was very happy to discover that I mostly own natural fabrics and there were few pieces I had to get rid of to make my wardrobe more of quality.

What I found the most interesting in this book is when it talks about an article of closing being "quality" depending on how you use it. For instance if you use plastic coat as a raincoat, it is "quality" or "q", but if you use it as a "leather" coat, it's non-q. I like this kind of philosophy. I am passionately against fakes - clothing that looks like couture but not, fake D & G, Valentino etc. I'd rather wear generic clothing than something with a false pretense of a brand name.

I believe this book is a must have.

Very Dated

I really enoyed Leah Feldon's book, "Does This Make Me Look Fat" and wanted to read some more of her work. Based on the good reviews this book received and the interesting chapter titles, I ordered it sight unseen.
Be warned-this book is from 1982. Nancy Reagen is often held up as a rich dressing woman to emulate. (What?!)Most of the fashion drawings show very heavily padded shoulders and wide belt styles a la 1980s. But worst of all, the 1980 advice often contradicts Leah Feldon's 2000 advice. For example: 2000 advice: wear dark colors-author's wardrobe is mostly black & dark colors-looks richer.1980 advice:off white jackets and slacks are "fashion essentials." (Miami Vice?) Even the cover is a contradiction-in the book the author states that long hair never looks elegant hanging loose,yet the cover shows a woman with a mane of hot-rollered slightly frizzy long hair hanging loose.
Sure the book covers basic concepts like cashmere makes for a rich sweater, and the fashion "types" in the first chapter are interesting. Had I been able to see this book in person though, I would have immediately dismissed it as dated. Buy instead, her new book from this decade.

Great book for emergencies

There was a copy of this book in the library of the hospital where I did my internship. It was highly recommended by the staff, and I found it tremendously helpful. I purchased a copy when I went into general practice. I don't see the same types of emergencies anymore, but it is a handy reference for toxocities, allergic reactions, blood transfusions, and other treatments and procedures that I don't use frequently. I only gave it 4 stars because I've found that some of the drug doses were off. I have annotations in it for the adjusted doses that I'm more comfortable with - especially with some of the steroid recommendations.

"SEVERE" Child Alienation

This book is particularly recommended for "rejected" parents of "SEVERELY" alienated children - rather than of children who are merely "mildly" or "moderately" alienated.

The book's subject is popularly known as the "parental alienation syndrome" (PAS), a misnomer. This book's real subject is alienated children, not alienated parents.

In fact, authors of some of this book's chapters explicitly state that "Parental Alienation" is a misnomer, and that the correct term for this condition should be "Child Alienation" - which is the term I used in the title of this "customer review."

When a "rejected" parent's child is "SEVERELY" alienated, the rejected parent may need "advanced" or "graduate" education in "PAS," particularly "SEVERE" child alienation. Then this is the book for you - a larger format book with perhaps twice the text on each page than on the pages of the more popular books on "PAS" - i.e., the select "PAS" books on which I have already posted "customer reviews" here on AMAZON.com, all of which select "PAS" books I have given "five star" ratings.

Parents of "SEVERELY" alienated children are confronted by the possibly inevitable prospect noted by the female commentator in "Chapter 8 - Tips for Kids," of Dr. Warshak's DVD entitled WELCOME BACK, PLUTO:

"When children first start becoming alienated, they don't realize that they are going down a path that may end in a COMPLETE LOSS of a parent . . . before they know it, alienated children have BOXED THEMSELVES INTO A CORNER. Even if [these SEVERELY alienated children] do reconnect with a [rejected] parent in the future, NOTHING can EVER MAKE UP FOR ALL THE LOST TIME."

Among all of the excellent chapters in this book, particularly noted for "rejected parents" are Chapter 13, "Factors Affecting Reconciliation Between the Child and Target Parent," and Chapter 21, "Beyond Parental Alienation Syndrome: Reconciling the Alienated Child and the Lost Parent."

This book's 34 Chapters are authored by an international team of 31 scholars, demonstrating that PAS (ergo, child alienation) is not a problem unique to the U.S., but is a well-recognized problem of international proportions.

This advanced and comprehensive book should also be required reading for any "therapist," etc., counseling a SEVERELY alienated child, or any professional (e.g., court evaluator or guardian ad litem) involved providing advice to a court re the "best interests of the child" in contested child custody cases involving SEVERELY alienated children.

This landmark book (2006) is notably dedicated to the memory of Dr. Richard A. Gardner, whose prolific professional work in child psychiatry first publicized the condition of child alienation and brought this condition to the world's attention, and who coined the term "parental alienation syndrome" to label this condition. Significantly, the text of this book's dedication, by Dr. Richard A. Warshak, specifically utilizes the term "child alienation" rather than "parental alienation."

NOTE: As noted in my "customer review" here on AMAZON.com of Dr. Richard A. Warshak's excellent book entitled DIVORCE POISON, I was already drafting this "customer review" of THE INTERNATIONAL HANDBOOK OF PARENTAL ALIENATION SYNDROME in April, 2011. This INTERNATIONAL HANDBOOK is perhaps a mandatory adjunct to DIVORCE POISON, for "rejected" parents of SEVERE child alienation.

Indeed, in 2009, being unrepresented by an attorney, I introduced, as an item of evidence, a copy of this book into the official court record of the child custody case involving my daughter. The corrupt judge refused to either look at the book; inform himself of this book's contents; or examine, discuss, or otherwise address this book's relevant contents, thereby deliberately ignoring international experts' opinions relevant to the "best interests" of my daughter, and of my supposed rights as the father of my daughter who - even as of the date of 2009 - was already "SEVERELY" alienated from me.

The Parental Alienation Syndrome and Gender Bias in courts

I just read Chapter 30 "The Parental Alienation Syndrome and Gender Bias in the Courts" written by Attorney Jeffery Leving in this book. Jeffery Leving's chapter was fantastic and very helpful to me as a parent. It also lead me to his book "Fathers Rights" which opened my eyes to the unfortunate gender bias in our legal system.

Bruce Moon is a source of wisdom in the field.

Bruce Moon is an art therapist who works in the field, studies the field, and understands the ever changing and evolving challenges involved with therapy. I would recommend this book to any student who is interested in art therapy, as well as any person who feels they would like to learn more about what art therapy really means, does, and has to offer.

I received this book in great time. It was brand new. It's for a college course. Unfortunately, I don't like the book but it's a mandatory read.
