I purchased this book about 4 months ago in order to have a quick reference available to me at work. I am a new graduate ICU RN in a VERY busy trauma center, and this book has everything I need to help refresh my memory quickly when I need it. All of the information in this book is organized system by system, so it's easy to find what you need. The information itself is "just the facts." Everything important regarding every subject pertinent to the ICU, including treatment modalities and nursing diagnoses for any medical condition you can think of! Critical things to remember are in bold lettering, so they really stand out on a page. There are illustrations to help "drive home" more complex concepts and procedures, along with countless graphs and tables of information. Also, this book provides review questions at the end of each section for us motivated readers who like to test ourselves. I'm SO glad I found this book. I take it with me every shift, and have even caught veteren RN's thumbing through it, which tells me that it's a great resource for anyone...whether you're still a student, a new graduate, or have been an RN for 20 years. It's also small enough to carry with you anywhere...and at the risk of sounding weird, I do pretty much take it everywhere I go. I LOVE this book!

Critical Care Nursing

I have been using Lippincott's review series since I started nursing school last year. These books are a must have! They are to the point, tells exactly what you need to know and they have review questions. These books are small and weigh almost nothing so they are easy to keep with you. I will be starting Critical Care which will be my last semester! I am so glad that Lippencott came out with Critical Care Review just in time. I haven't started the new semester yet but in my spare time I have been reading through the chapters. I highly reccommend these series! I even got my other classmates hooked too!

Good Review

This book has a great questions that I did not learn in the MRI in practice book. The questions are on the difficult side, which has it's good and bad points. On one hand, it is great if you can answer the questions correctly, you will probably pass your boards. On the other hand, unless you have successfully passed a MRI course or read the MRI in practice book, this review book may be difficult to extract information from. The book does give detailed answers in the back of the book, includes two practice tests, and has the questions divided into sections like the board exams. All in all, I would buy the book and would recommend the book. I hope this helps. Good luck to everyone taking the boards.

I have to disagree with most of these reviews. I bought this book a while back to study for the registry exam and although it did help, there were too many typos for me to really trust the info in it. I'm sure Mr. Wheeler's seminars are great, but the editor of his book should have double checked the information and math calculations before publishing this book.

This book has lots of helpful questions, however, it seems to be a bit dated as of today, 2004. For example, it states that the body coil is the best coil to use in imaging the pelvis vs. a surface coil. No one I talked to, and I talked to many with much more experience than I , could find the reasoning behind that.

Contributors address some of the most problematic callers to the crisis line including obscene callers, chronic callers, the silent caller and the caller who is a nuisance. There are also chapters on special populations as adolescents, war veterans, the elderly and individuals with disabilities on campus. The most impressive part of this book are the chapters that deal with new technologies. Crisis centers today are finding that they need to be accessible to their clients, many of whom are using texting and chat rooms as their main avenue of communication. There is very little literature on this subject and this book fills this gap very well. The chapter on training by John Kalafat provides the reader with a valuable training tool. It includes a training overview, screening and engaging trainees, creating a learning community; training strategies, feedback strategies and actual role play scripts. Since many crisis centers are staffed primarily by volunteers who may have limited crisis work this chapter is an invaluable tool for supervisors and trainers. The book s appendix includes a model for helping trainers identify the behaviors that affect the learning climate, a personal problems exercise, and an opening exercise. These are excellent tools for helping the trainee to conceptualize what is occurring within the helping contact. Trainees gain insight into what they bring to the session that may affect the outcome. Burnout is a problem in any helping profession and it is a major problem in a crisis setting where the helper does not often have an opportunity to see the final outcome of their intervention. The contact with the client may only be a ten to twenty minute telephone conversation and the interaction lacks sufficient closure for the counselor. In their chapter on Identifying and Responding to Burnout, James Rogers and Barbara Medlock provide insight into the problem and helpful suggestions for combating and treating burnout in crisis center staff. This book will be useful both in training crisis workers and as a university textbook .
